IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – Iranian citizens who wish to travel to Oman can stay in the country for up to 10 days without the need for an entry visa.

According to the Iran-Oman Joint Chamber of Commerce, Oman revoked visa regime for Iranians for ten-day visit to this sultanate. The move is in line with the government’s policy to boost tourism.

Iran is one of 103 countries whose citizens are exempt from visas to enter the Sultanate for ten-day tourist visit.

Other Asian countries included on this list are India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Lebanon, Bhutan, Jordan, Tajikistan, Macau, and Brunei.

The Omani government has not announced when this visa exemption and circular will come into effect but it had been earlier said that this circular will be operationalized from the beginning of 2021.

This type of tourism visa is free and will not be extended.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Singapore’s virus-hammered economy shrank almost 43 percent in the second quarter, in a sign that the country’s first recession in more than a decade was deeper than initially estimated, official data showed on Tuesday.

Tough curbs within the city-state to contain the coronavirus pandemic took a heavy toll on the economy, which is largely dependent on global trade and tourism, AFP reported.

Gross domestic product fell 42.9 percent in the three months to June from the previous quarter, worse than the government’s advance estimate of a 41.2-percent contraction released last month based on two months of data, the Trade Ministry said.

On-year, the economy shrank 13.2 percent in April-June, more than the initial estimate of 12.6 percent.

It marked the second consecutive quarter of contraction, meaning the city state has entered a recession for the first time since 2009, when it was battered by the global financial crisis.

Trade-dependent Singapore is one of the first countries to report growth data for the period when many nations entered lockdowns, and offers an ominous warning of the devastation being wrought on the global economy.

The worse-than-estimated figures will also ring alarm bells for other Asian economies reliant on trade — typically, Singapore is hit first before ripples spread across the region.

For the full year, the government said it expects the economy to contract between 5.0 and 7.0 percent, compared with an earlier forecast of between 4.0 and 7.0 percent, but added the road to recovery remains rough.

“Many of Singapore’s key final demand markets saw worse-than- projected economic disruptions in the second quarter,” the Trade Ministry said in a statement.

These markets “are also expected to experience a more gradual pace of recovery in the second half of 2020 due to the threat of localized outbreaks and the continued need for restriction measures to contain such outbreaks as they occur,” it added.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in a National Day message on Sunday warned that ‘the crisis is far from over’ as many countries have seen a resurgence of cases after initially managing to control the situation.

Singapore initially kept the virus in check through a strict regime of testing and contact-tracing, only for serious outbreaks to later sweep through crowded dormitories housing low-paid migrant workers.

It has reported more than 55,000 infections so far and 27 deaths.

Crew Safe after Iranian Container Ship Runs Aground near Singapore

According To Iran News, CEO of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) said the crew of an Iranian freighter are safe after the cargo ship ran aground off the coasts of Singapore, noting that the vessel’s hull has been damaged in the incident.

The Iranian container ship has veered off course at the Singapore Strait and has run aground, but the crew are safe and sound, Mohammad Rastad announced.

In a statement on Thursday, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) said the ship run by the company had been grounded in Singapore Strait on May 11 due to technical problems.

“However, this incident caused no corporal or environmental damage,” said the statement, adding that the loss suffered by the ship is covered under “credited international insurances.”

It said that the situation for the ship was now fully under control and it would soon be refloated, Press TV reported.

Earlier reports suggested that the Iranian ship Shahraz ran aground in the Indonesian territorial waters after trying to avoid a collision with an Indonesian bulk carrier.

A spokesperson of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore confirmed on Thursday that the incident had caused no injury or pollution.

Other sources said the grounding of the ship had caused no disruption to the traffic in the Singapore Strait although vessels sailing in the vicinity have been issued with a warning to keep the required distance.

A report on the Offshore Energy website said that the heavily-loaded Shahraz, a 6,572 TEU boxship built in 2008, would probably need to be lightered before it can resume sailing.

The report described the financial losses that resulted from the grounding as considerable, saying it could be a “total loss” for the insurer.

It said the Indonesian bulker involved in the incident had no visible traces of damage, allowing it to refloat and anchor off Indonesia’s Batam.

Lockheed Martin Drops Out of Singapore Airshow over Coronavirus Concerns

According To Iran News, The Pentagon shrunk the size of its delegation traveling to the Singapore Airshow and US defense firm Lockheed Martin said it would not attend, as the impact of the coronavirus has reduced participation in the event.

However, Boeing told CNBC on Saturday that it still plans to attend the airshow and will be “an active participant.”

Undersecretary of Defense Ellen Lord will no longer attend the event “due to extenuating circumstances,” Lieutenant Colonel Mike Andrews said in a statement.

Lord is the Pentagon’s chief weapons buyer and was the Pentagon’s lead representative at the event. Other Pentagon leaders including uniformed military officials plan to attend.

Lockheed Martin became the first major US defense company to announce it will not attend the airshow due to the coronavirus.

“We determined this was in the best interest of our employees and aligned with the US Department of Defense’s decision to reduce its presence,” Lockheed said in a statement, Reuters reported.

The airshow will continue next week, but organizers might look to limit public visitors, a Singaporean official said on Friday, as Singapore reported three more coronavirus cases that authorities have not yet linked to previous infections or travel to China.

The new cases take Singapore’s virus tally to 33 with the alert level raised to orange, denoting the disease is severe and passes easily from person-to-person. Red – the highest alert level – indicates it is spreading widely.

The trade portion of the airshow, held every two years, is due to begin on Feb. 11.

Business jet manufacturers Bombardier, Textron and General Dynamics’ Gulfstream division are also among those to have pulled out of the airshow.
