TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran and Zimbabwe have signed a memorandum of understanding in pharmaceutical, medical equipment, medical education and health systems management fields which are expected to boost bilateral collaboration in the health sector.

Despite the illegal sanctions imposed on Iran, the country has made great advancements in the pharmaceutical sector and manufactures 97% of its medicines; hence Zimbabwe is looking forward to tapping into the country’s expertise for manufacturing the bulk of essential medicines in line with its national pharmaceutical strategy.

Iran’s Minister of Health and Medical Education Bahram Einollahi is confident ties between Zimbabwe and Iran will be of great benefit to the two countries.

“The support of your country on different platforms has shown that you are a good friend. Good things are happening in our bilateral relations. Further prospects are very high,” he said.

“There is a lot of untapped potential on both ends, hence we need to operationalize these capacities so that we have fruitful relations. We need to enter into serious business so that we deepen our ties. Iran is one of the top countries in terms of healthcare in the Middle East.”

Zimbabwean Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said the country is looking forward to the implementation of the memorandum of understanding, Financial Tribune reported.

“The medical equipment we saw will make a huge difference to our healthcare system. Cancer is a challenge for Zimbabwe hence these cancer machines will be very useful. We are interested in mobile hospitals. As you are aware, we have been hit by major disasters, so they are handy. Overall, my delegation noted the importance you attach to research,” Chiwenga said.

In line with its National Pharmaceutical Strategy, Zimbabwe has been developing various strategies to ensure the country becomes self-sufficient in terms of medicines and the partnership with Iranian companies is expected to be a step toward achieving this target.

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – Head of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce Gholamhossein Shafei yesterday met Zimbabwean Ambassador to Tehran Christopher Mapanga and during the meeting, both explored ways for boosting economic cooperation.

In the meeting, Shafei blamed lack of information about Zimbabwe’s economic potentials as a hurdle for boosting economic cooperation between both states.

He also criticized sanctions against Zimbabwe, adding that sanction is the common pain for Iran and Zimbabwe.

Shafei added that interactions could be a good base for economic activities of Zimbabwe, admitting that currently, bilateral economic relations between Iran and Zimbabwe is in its lowest level since 2015 and no joint economic commission has been held since 2015. He called for immediate holding of the meeting which can have a positive impact on economic cooperation.

Shafei added that there are several fields for cooperation, noting that Iran and Zimbabwe can cooperate in agro, mine, energy, oil derivatives, technical and engineering services and agro machineries.

He also blamed lack of enough information about economic potentials which have slowed down bilateral trade, adding that Iran Chamber of Commerce is ready to hold Zimbabwe Economic Day and it will be a good opportunity for introduction of Zimbabwean economic capacities for Iranian economic activists.

Meanwhile, Mapanga, for his part, pointed to the pressures of sanctions on Iran and Zimbabwe, adding that Zimbabwe has been tolerating pressures and sanctions for years and today it has decided to learn from Iran how to handle the pressures.

He also called for exchange of trade information between both states for setting a comprehensive solution for bilateral economic relations, adding that currently 70 percent of land in Zimbabwe is ready for cultivation but it has remained intact because it needs agro machineries.

Mapanga noted Iran can help his country in this field, saying there are several undiscovered rich mines of metals in Zimbabwe and the country is rich in gas reserves but it is weak in terms of electricity production.

He also called for cooperation between chambers of commerce of both states in order to help their governments for developing economic relations.

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has resisted mounting pressure to step down, telling the nation that he will preside over a ruling party congress next month.

The 93-year-old Zimbabwean leader had been widely expected to announce his resignation as Zimbabwe’s head of state and government on Sunday, five days after a surprise military takeover in which he was placed under house arrest, Al Jazeera reported.

But in his much-anticipated TV address from his State House office, Mugabe acknowledged criticism but said the country needs to “return to normalcy” without making any statement on his position.

“Whatever the pros and cons of how they [the army] went about their operation, I, as commander-in-chief, do acknowledge their concerns,” said Mugabe, seated alongside army commanders.

“We must learn to forgive and resolve contradictions real or perceived in a comradely Zimbabwean spirit,” he added.

It was a dramatic turn of events in a week that has seen the army taking control and the streets of Harare filled with tens of thousands of people expressing support for the military’s action and calling for the president to step down.

Earlier on Sunday, there were jubilant scenes at the ZANU-PF headquarters in Harare as the ruling party announced the expulsion of Mugabe as its leader and gave him a Monday noon ultimatum to step down as president, or face impeachment.

ZANU-PF officials said Mugabe, who has been leading Zimbabwe for 37 years, would face impeachment proceedings in parliament on Tuesday if the deadline passed.

Party members also expelled his wife, Grace, from its ranks and voted to name the sacked Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom Mugabe fired on November 6, as new party leader.

Despite having been dismissed as ZANU-PF’s leader, Mugabe vowed to preside over a key party conference in December.

“The party congress is due in a few weeks and I will preside over its processes,” he said in his national address.

Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa, reporting from Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, said “a lot of people are surprised” Mugabe did not step down “after all this pressure”.

“There is no celebration on the streets, just disbelief,” she said.

“Sources behind the scenes say that he is being stubborn and for now he isn’t going anywhere,” added Mutasa.

“It could be a plan he’s working on to exit gracefully, or it could also be that he doesn’t understand there is such a massive unhappiness,” she added, noting all eyes would now be on the Monday midday deadline.

Some Zimbabweans who tuned in to watch Mugabe’s speech live said they were let down by his refusal to step down.

“We are still just waiting to hear something definitive, like ‘I’m stepping down’,” said a young Harare resident.

“He just spoke a lot and he didn’t say anything,” he added.

Stephen Chan, a professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies, said that despite Mugabe’s defiant stance, his decades-long rule was effectively over.

“I’ll be most surprised if he survives the week,” Chan, author of Robert Mugabe: A Life of Power and Violence, told Al Jazeera from the UK capital, London.

“He can’t address the Congress; he is no longer the president of the party.

“This is just defiance – this is simply the old man going down with all of his guns firing. They are blank shots, however, because they can’t have any real effect.”

Georgina Godwin, a Zimbabwean journalist, pointed to the presence of army officials next to Mugabe to argue that his speech had been approved by the military.

“I’m sure the army must have agreed to this – all the generals were sitting there,” she told Al Jazeera.

“This is the way to have a dignified exit.”
