Iranian foreign ministry spokesman has condemned an assassination attempt against Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa during an election rally in the city of Bulawayo on Saturday.

In a statement on Sunday, Bahram Ghasemi also wished for a complete recovery of those who sustained injury in a bomb explosion at White City Stadium in the city of Bulawayo, where people had gathered for President Mnangagwa’s campaign ahead of nationwide elections on 30 July.

According to the country’s Health Minister David Parirenyatwa, 15 people were injured, three of them in critical conditions.

Ghasemi further censured the use of violence for political motives, and voiced hope that with the people’s unity and full vigilance, Zimbabwe’s nationwide elections will be held in peace and security.
