TEHRAN (Iran News) – At a low-key ceremony to mark the unveiling of the Olympic flame display on Monday, Tokyo officials reiterated that next year’s Games will be a symbol of hope for the world as it recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.

The flame will be on show from today until November 1 at the Japanese Olympic Museum, located next to the National Stadium purpose-built for the Games which were due to take place this year but were rescheduled for 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Reuters reported.

The flame was last seen in Fukushima after the torch relay was canceled following its arrival from Greece but before it could start a planned tour of Japan following the decision to postpone the Games in March.

“Next year, this flame will be carried by about 10,000 torchbearers and will light the Olympic cauldron,” Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori said.

“We would like to make efforts toward this so that we can ensure a great success of the Games.”

Organizers have not announced details of the torch relay. The original 121-day plan had the torch traveling to all of Japan’s 47 prefectures.

“I suppose athletes aiming to participate in Olympics and Paralympics are training hard every day while having great anxiety (due to coronavirus),” said Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) president Yasuhiro Yamashita who received the flame from Mori.

“I am confident that this flame, which is displayed today, will be moral support for such athletes.”

To limit crowds gathering to view the flame, there will be a reservation system with a designated date and time.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Ex-Italy volleyball coach Mauro Berruto believes that Iran National Team has a chance of winning an Olympic Games medal depending on how they prepare for the Games.

Born in Turin, Berruto graduated in philosophy and started his career in a volley with CUS Torino Pallavolo in 1994 and was named Italy coach in 2010. A year later, he achieved the silver medal in the European Championship. Under his leadership, Italy defeated Bulgaria to gain the bronze medal in the 20120 Olympic Games in London.

At the World League 2013, his team achieved bronze, while in the same year he led the Italian team to the second consecutive silver medal in the European Championships.

Italy qualified for the final round of the World League 2014, held in Florence, and took another bronze medal.

In an exclusive interview with Tehran Times, Berruto has said the Iranian team is capable of winning the first-ever medal at the Olympic Games but the team needs to prepare well for the prestigious event.

As you know, Iran has been reportedly linked with Italian coaches Angelo Lorenzetti, Ferdinando De Giorgi, and Roberto Piazza. Do you think they are a good choice for the Iranian team?

I really don’t want to judge. All of them are good coaches, of course, but they are very busy with their clubs in the A1 league in Italy. I do believe that a coach of a high-level national team like Iran, should be committed 100% to the team. That was my decision when I had the honor to coach the Italian National Team. I left the club (it was Macerata at that time) and I worked five marvelous years for Italy and I was full-time committed to the national team. This is just my opinion of course!

After parting ways with Italy in 2015, you have not coached any team and it seems you have retired from coaching volleyball.

After a long time, I decided to have a break from volleyball. I got many opportunities but I decided to make very different and beautiful things, like being a director of a university of storytelling and performing arts in my hometown, Torino. I never said that I’ll not be back in volleyball. I think I’m still “quite” young, as a coach, in a few days I’ll be 51. But for sure if I’ll be back it won’t be with a club, if I’ll be back it will be with a National Team. A team can light again a “fire” inside of me.

Mauro Berruto knows Iran volleyball well because he has traveled to Tehran to meet the Iranian team several times. Could you speak a little more in-depth about volleyball in Iran and also the Iranian fans?

Playing against Iran (many times) was a beautiful experience. The team were and are absolutely high-level and their fans are hard to describe! I think Azadi Stadium is the noisiest hall I’ve ever seen! Really beautiful. And, also there is always an enormous number of Iranian fans, living in Italy. I think volleyball in Iran is something very important and it’s easy to understand it when you see with your own eyes.

Iran joined the great teams in the world under the stewardship of Julio Velasco and then continued its way with Lozano and Kolakovic. I think it’s a huge setback for Iran in its progressive process. What’s your opinion on this matter?

Iran must continue on this way. I know Iran has a huge project on youngsters and will have good players for a long time! The only necessary thing is to increase the number of matches against five top-ranked teams in the world. You become better when you play often against the best.

You led Italy to a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Do you think the Iranian team has a chance of winning a medal in the Olympics?

I will be straight: this has to be the target for Iranian volleyball, for sure. Like all the great targets: difficult but achievable.

You have a good knowledge of Iranian stars and I want to know if you want to choose one, which player is your choice?

I’m “in love” with Saeid Marouf. He’s a great talent, not a giant physically and incredibly smart and with a great technique. And he’s a leader, you can feel it.

As a former coach of Lube, have you followed Amir Ghafour in the Italian team?

Yes, Ghafour is a great player, but Iran has many good ones, really. Most of them absolutely ready for the very top level.

Iran is the best team in Asia and the golden generation has lived up to all expectations so far. But the team needs fresh energy to stay on high. Do you anticipate a bright future for Iran volleyball?

As I said, a bright future depends on playing more against top teams. Sorry to say, but the Asiatic championship is not enough, is not the right target. If you want to compete for a medal at the Olympic Games (and you should!) you must play constantly against Brazil, Russia, the US, Italy, Poland, Serbia, France, etc. Sorry again, but China or Japan, or Korea are not the “right” competitors for Iran.

The cancellation of the volleyball tournaments due to COVID-19 is a big blew to the sport. Playing behind the closed doors could be a better way but FIVB doesn’t think so. What about you?

It’s really early to answer this question. In Italy, the situation is still dramatic and the pandemic will have a huge effect on the sports economy. Personally, I can’t imagine playing matches behind closed doors. My passion for volleyball was so big when I felt the “magic” feeling between players and fans. And… really? Can you imagine Iran playing behind closed doors? I do hope we will find a solution to follow the real nature of the sport: we need to inspire spectators. That is the sport that I love.

And my last question, when do you come out of retirement?

As I told when somebody will propose a project can make my heart beat faster.

First Time Published in Tehran Times.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – On Tuesday, the Tokyo 2020 countdown clock showed there were just 122 days to go before the Olympics opening ceremony.

By Wednesday morning, the clock, outside the Tokyo station building, simply displayed the current date and time. The switch was so sudden that commuters paused to take photos, the Guardian reported.

The countdown clock will be reset as soon as organizers and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decide when, exactly, a supposedly post-coronavirus world is ready for the second coming of the Tokyo Games.

Hours after Japan’s Prime Minister Abe Shinzo confirmed that the Games would be held “no later than next summer”, some Tokyoites were conflicted about their reaction.

Emi Hagino, a media consultant who was born and raised in the capital, said she had initially accepted the delay as inevitable, but then felt “massively let down”, as it would affect her business.

“My parents remember watching the 1964 Olympics here, so they have experienced it before, but for me it was going to be a magical once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to actually see the world’s biggest sporting event with my own eyes, with everyone’s focus on my city,” she said.

“I can wait for another year, but please, no longer.”

Koichi Teratani, who blogs about the city’s Kabukicho entertainment district – a popular destination among Chinese tourists – said the postponement was a second blow for local businesses still reeling from the financial costs inflicted by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Hotels are already struggling from cancellations, so the smaller ones that don’t have the means to weather the storm face even more uncertainty,” said Teratani, who had just started printing 40,000 copies of a bilingual guidebook to Kabukicho – an area packed with thousands of bars, restaurants, and clubs – hand out to visitors during the Olympics when the postponement was announced.

“We can hang on to them for another year, even though some of the information might be a bit out of date,” he said.

There was disappointment that the spectacle, more than six years in the planning, had been delayed, but relief, too, both that the speculation of recent weeks had ended and, crucially, that Abe and the IOC president, Thomas Bach, had agreed that cancellation was out of the question.

“I think the Japanese government and the IOC had no choice but to postpone because holding the Olympics without athletes from around the world would have run counter to the Olympic Charter,” said Akino Yoshihara, a Kyoto-based translator who had been looking forward to watching track and field events.

“It would have been unfair if some athletes had been denied the opportunity to compete because of the coronavirus situation in their countries.”

Yujiro Nakao, a Tokyo company employee, agreed that a delay was the only sensible response to the outbreak, but said he had “mixed feelings” about not being able to see athletes who had spent years preparing for the biggest moment of their careers.

The first postponement in the Olympics’ 124-year modern history is expected to create a financial headache for the myriad businesses with a financial stake in the Games.

The IOC and local organizers will have to renegotiate contracts with official broadcasters and sponsors and extend rent agreements on venues that, until Tuesday, were to have served their purpose by the time the Paralympics ended in early September.

The Nikkei business delay reported on Wednesday that the organizing committee estimates that the postponement will raise the total cost for the Games by 300 billion yen ($2.7 billion) due to additional labor and other costs. There is no guarantee, either, that the 80,000 volunteers who were due to descend on Tokyo this summer will be available next year.

“Obviously, the celebratory mood of the Olympics had already been fading due to the coronavirus,” an official from one of the Games’ sponsors told the newspaper.

“Perhaps it would not have been fully welcomed if the Games had gone on as scheduled. We just need to start afresh.”

The general mood was best summed up by the Japanese phrase shikata ga nai (it can’t be helped) – a catchall response to any situation, large or small, over which people believe they have no influence. Recent polls indicated that about 70 percent of Japanese people had resigned themselves to a postponement as soon as it became clear that the coronavirus was going to take months, possibly much longer, to bring under control.

Ami Takada, a recent high school graduate, was among those enjoying the spring sunshine in Tokyo on Wednesday who wondered if a one-year delay would be long enough, given the virus’s seemingly unstoppable onslaught.

“If they don’t hold the Olympics [in 2021], it will be the end for the Japanese economy,” she said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Japanese government officials insisted on Friday they have no plans to alter the Olympics, including holding it without spectators, after US President Donald Trump proposed a delay over the coronavirus.

The fate of the 2020 Games, scheduled to open in Tokyo on July 24, has been thrown into doubt by the outbreak of the virus, now dubbed a pandemic, AFP reported.

But organizers, Japanese government officials and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have insisted preparation for the Games is on track, with no expectations of a postponement or cancelation.

“There is no change in the government policy in that we closely cooperate with the IOC, the organizing committee, and the Tokyo metropolitan government to steadily prepare for holding the Games as scheduled,” government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

He said Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and Trump had held a phone call to discuss the outbreak as well as the Olympics.

“In the telephone talks with President Trump, the prime minister mentioned our efforts toward holding the Games, and the president said he highly values Japan’s efforts on transparency,” Suga said.

He did not say whether Trump had repeated his suggestion, made a day earlier, that the Games might need to be delayed.

“I would say maybe they postpone it for a year,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday.

“You know, I like that better than I like having empty stadiums all over the place. I think if you cancel it, make it a year later, that’s a better alternative than doing it with no crowd,” he said.

The suggestion was roundly dismissed by Japan’s Olympic Minister Seiko Hashimoto.

“I’m aware of President Trump’s remarks but neither the IOC nor the organizing committee is thinking about delaying or canceling the Games at all,” she said at a regular briefing Friday.

Asked about the possibility of scaling back the number of spectators, Hashimoto said, “We are not thinking about that at all.”

Suga also said the government “doesn’t envisage” either a Games without spectators or the prospect of athletes withdrawing from the event.

IOC chief Thomas Bach told German television ARD on Thursday that the body would follow recommendations by the World Health Organization, but for now, it continues to work for “successful” Games.

He acknowledged however that cancelations of Olympic qualifiers are starting to pose “serious problems”.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Sports have always been the strongest weapon to fight disease but newly discovered coronavirus is going to kill it.

So many sports events have been postponed or will take place behind closed doors due to the coronavirus concerns.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed several Champions League’s matches and rescheduled the women’s Olympic qualifier between China and South Korea.

In Iran, sports leagues except football have been canceled. Iran Professional League (IPL) matches take place behind closed doors and the football-mad fans find it annoying.

Coronavirus has dampened enthusiasm for the games and situation may be worse than we know.

So many countries have closed the schools, cinemas, competitions and museums and the future remains unclear.

Persian New Year, called Nowruz, is approaching but the Iranians are not happy since the coronavirus has killed 43 people so far and closed their festivals.

More than 50 countries have been affected, including Iran.

On Saturday, Head of Hong Kong Football Association Pui Kwan-kay said it was “highly unlikely” that Hong Kong’s 2022 World Cup Asian zone qualifier against Iran next month will go ahead because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The match slated for March 26 is a must-win game for Team Melli, however, the East Asian country is going to meet Iran in a neutral field.

Iraq leads the group on 11 points, followed by Bahrain (9), Iran (6) and Hong Kong (5) with Cambodia bottom on one point.

Sports, especially football is life for the most Iranian people but continuation of the situation would be chaotic in one word.

Around 83,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed worldwide since the outbreak began in Wuhan, China.

Nearly 79,000 of the cases have been recorded in China, however the virus is now believed to be spreading faster outside the country.

Coronavirus has killed sports and hope for treating the novel coronavirus could be on the horizon since there is, so far, no cure or vaccine for the virus.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games organizers on Monday rolled out the motto for this year’s Olympics, “United by Emotion”, which they said reflected the “universal values” and “unifying power of sport.”

“Crowds of spectators who do not know each other prior to the Games will come together and learn that there is more that unites them than divides them,” Tokyo 2020 said as it unveiled the motto, AFP reported.

The official 2020 Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” or “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, but each host city chooses its own motto to accompany that edition of the Games.

London’s motto in 2012 was “Inspire a Generation”, whereas Athens in 2004 went for “Welcome Home” – a nod to the birthplace of the Games in Olympia.

Less well-received was Sochi, which plumped for “Hot. Cool. Yours”, sparking derision in some quarters.

Tokyo said the motto would be beamed onto the Skytree tower in the Japanese capital to raise awareness as it will be seen for miles around.

The opening ceremony will be on July 24 and organizers have stressed there is no discussion about changing this date despite the coronavirus crisis hitting global transport.

Tokyo 2020 rollouts have not always been smooth. In September 2015, the Games logo was ditched after accusations of plagiarism.

Designer Olivier Debie said the design was stolen from his logo for a Belgian theater and threatened court action before officials withdrew the emblem, saying it “no longer has public support.”

Olympics Minister Seiko Hashimoto said organizers are not considering canceling the Olympics, which start on July 24.

“We in Japan, will keep in close contact with everybody, including the International Olympic Committee and the World Health Organization, to take appropriate steps and keep the virus from affecting the Olympics,” Abe told a parliamentary committee, Reuters reported.

The death toll from the coronavirus epidemic in China rose to 361 on Monday and a growing number of countries are reporting cases. Japan has 20 confirmed cases, 17 of which were people who had been to China or are Chinese.

On the other hand, the Philippines Department of Health said a 44-year-old man from Wuhan city in central Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, had died after developing severe pneumonia. It was the first death out of more than 130 cases reported in around two dozen other countries and regions outside of mainland China.

The man who died was a companion of a 38-year-old Chinese woman, also from Wuhan, who was the first and only other person to test positive for the virus in the Philippines. Both patients arrived in the Philippines via Hong Kong on Jan. 21.
