TEHRAN (Iran News) – Gharibabadi made the remarks addressing a Friday night session of the IAEA Board of Governors. While Iran has remained committed to maintaining a peaceful nuclear program, an Iranian nuclear scientist was assassinated by an Israeli terrorist attack, the ambassador said.

He called on the agency and all the member states to fulfill their obligations under the international law concerning the fight against terrorism and condemn such an act of aggression in the strongest possible terms.

Gharibabadi reiterated that Iran will not let such a crime go unanswered.

The IAEA Board of Governors convened for a regular meeting on March 1-5.

Previously, Gharibabadi made the comment while elaborating on the actions taken to stop the adoption of the anti-Iran resolution by the three European countries.

“With the three European countries beginning to present a US-backed resolution against Iran at the Board of Governors, different measures were put on the agenda [to stop the move],” he said.

“The moves included extensive consultations with members of the Board of Governors in Vienna and the capitals of member states, the [Iranian] foreign minister’s sending a letter to his opposite numbers in different member states of the Board of Governors, Iran explaining its stances to the IAEA and Board of Governors’ members in a briefing text, tapping into the potential of the Secretariat of the IAEA and the agency’s director-general to strive to maintain cooperation and interaction [between Iran and the IAEA], making special coordination with Russia and China, which expressed their opposition to the resolution, and sending messages by the Iranian president, foreign minister, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and the deputy foreign minister for political affairs,” he explained.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Minister of Defense Brigadier General Amir Hatami announced that there is “serious evidence” about the role of the Zionist regime of Israel in the November 2020 assassination of Iranian scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. The Brigadier General made the remarks in a letter to his counterparts in over 60 world countries about Fakhrizadeh’s assassination.

Dr. Fakhrizadeh, Deputy Minister of Defense and Head of the Research and Innovation Organization of the Ministry of Defense of Iran, who was described by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “a distinguished nuclear and defense scientist”, was assassinated and attained martyrdom on Friday evening, November 27, near the town of Absard, Damavand city, east to Tehran during a terrorist operation by the criminal agents of the Zionist regime.

In his letter, General Hatami wrote about scientific and research achievements and initiatives gained and developed by Dr. Fakhrizadeh.

Further, he stressed the need to put aside double-standard behavior towards the fight against state terrorism.

Then, he called on the global community to take part in the campaign against “this inhuman, illegitimate and felonious move.”

Referring to the record “direct involvement” of the Zionist regime’s intelligence services in assassinating Iranian scientists, the minister said that there is also serious evidence about the regime’s role in this terror [the assassination of Fakhrizadeh].

Iran sees silence on this terrorist act as an excuse for its repetition and insecurity in the world, the minister underlined.

He further announced that Iran preserves the right to respond to the assassination.

“First to investigate this crime and firmly prosecute its perpetrators and its commanders, second to continue the martyr’s scientific and technological efforts in all the sectors where he was active,” Khamenei.ir has quoted the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as speaking about the incident.

TEHRAN (Iran News) -UAE, Jordan condemn the assassination of the Iranian scientist, In a statement on Sunday, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said: “it condemns the heinous assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, which could further fuel conflict in the region.”

“Given the current situation in the region, the UAE calls upon all parties to exercise maximum degrees of self-restraint to avoid dragging the region into new levels of instability and threat to peace,” said the statement carried by the Emirates News Agency.

“The state of instability the region is currently going through, and the security challenges it faces, drive us all to work towards averting acts that could lead to escalation and eventually threaten the stability of the entire region,” it stressed

Separately, Jordan condemned the killing of the top Iranian scientist and called for collective efforts to avoid an escalation in tensions in the Middle East region.

Fakhrizadeh, who headed the Iranian Defense Ministry’s Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (known by its acronym SPND), was targeted on Friday in a multi-pronged attack involving at least one explosion and small fire by several assailants in Absard city of Damavand County, Tehran Province.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the assassination bears the clear hallmark of atrocities committed by the Israeli regime, which has already murdered some of Iran’s scientific elites.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, the country’s nuclear agency, has likewise suspected Israeli involvement in both the assassination and a July incident at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility. “It looks like the Zionist regime has a role in these issues,” AEOI Spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said on Saturday.

No party has yet claimed responsibility for the atrocity.

“Good news, a plane carrying Dr. Sirous Asgari has taken off from America. Congratulations to his wife and family,” Zarif wrote in a post on his Instagram account.

Asgari was accused by a US court in 2016 of stealing trade secrets while on an academic visit to Ohio, but the 59-year-old scientist from Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology was acquitted in November.

The academic told British newspaper The Guardian in March that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency was keeping him in a detention center in Louisiana without basic sanitation and refusing to let him return to Iran despite his exoneration.

The US agency database still listed Asgari as being detained in the state of Mississippi, AFP reported.

On Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said Asgari’s case was closed and that he was likely to return to the Islamic Republic within two or three days.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian scientist Sirous Asgari who is behind bars at a US immigration jail will be repatriated as soon as he tests negative for the novel coronavirus, spokesperson for the Iranian administration said.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Ali Rabiee said Tehran is closely monitoring the situation surrounding the imprisoned Iranian scientist through its interests section in Washington, DC.

“… the US must abandon immoral and inhumane behavior in this case,” Ali Rabiee said.

He also noted that Dr. Sirous Asgari will be released from the US prison and return home if he tests negative for COVID-19.

“All Iranian inmates in the US have been imprisoned on bogus charges, and we have obtained a report that they are being held without medical care” the spokesman deplored.

Dr. Sirous Asgari, a materials science and engineering professor who spoke out in March about the unsanitary and “inhumane” conditions in detention, was placed in an isolation cell this week inside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) jail in Louisiana.

His lawyers learned on Tuesday that his COVID-19 test was positive, and in a phone call with the Guardian, Asgari had a bad cough and said he had had a fever for days.

He and his family are calling for his release to a medical facility where he can receive proper care.

“It makes sense to send me to the hospital as soon as possible. I don’t trust them at all,” the 59-year-old said on Tuesday amid repeated coughing fits. “If something happens, they are not fast responders … I prefer to leave this dirty place.”

Asgari’s story sparked international outrage after he spoke about his fears of COVID-19 spreading inside crowded Ice facilities with substandard cleaning practices and a lack of supplies. The professor, who has a history of respiratory problems, was exonerated in a US sanctions trial last year, but Ice has refused to release him or allow him to return to Iran. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif recently called for his release, as have some US lawmakers and human rights groups.

Sirous Asgari is confined to a small room at the Winn correctional center in Louisiana, a state hard hit by the coronavirus.

Ice informed the attorneys that Asgari’s test was positive on Tuesday, but Asgari said Ice had not yet told him the results and that he had learned of them on a call with his family and lawyers. “The nurse … always says the test results are not in,” Sirous Asgari said, noting that the medical staff checked on him twice or three times a day.

Ice told Asgari’s lawyers he would only be released to a hospital if he was struggling to breathe, the attorneys said.

Noting that the US has been trapping the Iranian scientists, Gholami said, “They issue visas for Iranian professors and then arrest them as soon as the professors arrive in the US.”

This is just a game to capture the Iranian talents, he added.

Gholami was referring to the case of Iranian stem cell scientist Dr. Masoud Soleimani, who has been behind bars in the US without trial for the past seven months.

Back in October 2018, Soleimani, a professor and biomedical researcher at the Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) in Tehran, was arrested by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) upon his arrival in the US.

Soleimani had been invited by the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for leading a research program there, but he was secretly indicted by the FBI, which also canceled his research visa. Neither the FBI nor the US prosecutors have so far officially commented on his detention.

Gholami reiterated that Dr. Soleimani’s case will be followed until he is released.

He also dismissed any relation between Soleimani’s work to the US’ unilateral sanctions against Iran.

Reportedly, the Iranian scientist has been indicted for purported trade sanction violations over eight vials of human growth hormone.

BJay Pak, the US attorney in Atlanta, secured Soleimani’s indictment on June 12, 2018, just a month after President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal, and Soleimani had been fully unaware of such an indictment when he flew to the US.

The seizure occurred at a time when Washington was still a signatory to the 2015 nuclear deal, and anti-Iran sanctions had not been re-imposed yet.

Brother says Soleimani detained under false accusations

Soleimani’s brother has detailed how he and his family have been suffering as a result of poor contact with the prisoner and no clear prospect of his release.

“They have asked my brother to confess on trying to circumvent the sanctions, but he has not surrendered to their demands,” he said.

The brother went on to say that Soleimani is being kept in one of the US’s worst prisons.

“This prison is not safe,” he, meanwhile, added, calling the detention center among the worst in the United States.

Soleimani was “definitely” being held hostage by the US administration, the brother said. “How can a researcher and a physician, who does not have any criminal record and boasts numerous articles published in international circles, be placed in detention?” he asked.

His brother explained how American authorities would withhold information on him for several consecutive months, and that they could only learn about his situation after enlisting legal representation.

This is not the first time US authorities’ detain Iranians or Iranian dual nationals without producing any tangible explanation.

Almost 50 Iranian nationals are currently imprisoned in the United States under various pretexts, mainly bypassing the US sanctions.
