TEHRAN (Iran News) – Some of the leading experts of contemporary Italian and Iranian architecture, such as Mario Cucinella, met in a hybrid format on January 25 to talk about sustainable architecture and create opportunities for cooperation in the restoration of historical buildings.

The roundtable, organized by the Italian Embassy in Tehran in cooperation with Domus magazine, provided an opportunity to discuss initiatives to safeguard the architectural heritage of both countries.

Among the participants were representatives of Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, as well as of the cities of Teheran, Shiraz, Persepolis and Isfahan. Italian specialized associations, such as Assorestauro and Alliance of Cooperatives, have presented their own know-how and expertise in safeguarding architectural heritage and proposed ways to promote the architectural heritage and make it accessible to the wider public.

In the session dedicated to sustainability, Italian and Iranian architects discussed the new trends in contemporary architecture, focused on optimizing the use of resources, minimizing the impact of climate change, choosing local materials, and involving, whenever possible, local communities.

The panelists have also had the opportunity to share their own experience in the field in the framework of decades-long cooperation between Italy and Iran in the field of architecture and design.

The roundtable on architecture and sustainability is part of a series of events recently promoted by the Italian Embassy in Tehran, focused on architecture and design, such as the video series “Domus Eyes on Iran” and the publication of a special monographic issue dedicated to Iran by Domus in November 2021. On Monday, a preview of the new exhibition “Domus Design – Tehran 2022” was presented at the residence of Ambassador Giuseppe Perrone, in the presence of the Editorial Director of Domus, Walter Mariotti, 47 years after the “Domus Design” exhibition organized by the Milan-based magazine in Tehran in 1975.

The event was organized in collaboration with the two countries’ sectorial business associations (FEDERUNACOMA and ATMAK) and with the support of the bilateral Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Italy-Iran and Iran-Italy), several territorial Chambers (Iran, Arak, Isfahan, and Tehran) and Iran Chamber of Cooperatives.

In the introductory session, the Ambassador of Italy, Giuseppe Perrone, stressed the important role historically played by Italian companies in this sector and the continuing interest existing in both countries towards greater cooperation. Through the online event, a large number of participants were able to establish new contacts and discuss prospects for cooperation on a business-to-business basis in the digital platform made available by the Italian Trade Agency.

Agricultural machinery is indeed a field of traditional strength for Italian companies in Iran. In the current scenario in which Iran is looking to strengthen its position as a regional agricultural hub, the potential for cooperation with companies is quite significant and can help further raise the productivity of Iranian businesses in the agricultural sector.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran and Italy are demonstrating a willingness to revive, by hook or by crook, the longstanding traditional economic ties, particularly between their private sectors, despite the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and US unilateral sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Having begun in Wuhan, China in December, the spread of the novel coronavirus, which causes an acute respiratory disease known as COVID-19 in most of the infected, has expanded to touch nearly every corner of the globe, infecting over 16.22 million and killing more than 648,800.

In addition to its human casualties, the outbreak has led to a significant drop in international trade transactions mainly due to the closure of land and air borders and restrictions on holding face-to-face meetings in an effort to curb the spread of the virus and reduce the risks.

Coupled with the negative impacts of Washington’s sanctions on Tehran, reimposed following the May 2018 US withdrawal from a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and P5+1, the coronavirus outbreak has reduced Iran’s already strained economic relations with European states.

However, it appears as if the zeal shown by Iran and Italy for reviving their long-lasting trade ties outweighs the obstacles, as they have already launched efforts to re-establish connection between their trade sectors through cyberspace at a time when the world is yearning for direct face-to-face contacts.

According to the press and culture counselor at the Italian Embassy in Iran, on Wednesday the two countries held a virtual business forum titled, ‘Economic Relations between Italy and Iran in the Current Context: Non-oil sectors, SMEs’ role, EU support’. The forum was hosted by the think tank, The European House – Ambrosetti in partnership with the Italian Embassy in the Iranian capital and the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIMA).

Over 800 people, including the representatives of the Iranian and Italian private sectors, as well as business consultants and professionals, from the two countries, attended the online event, which was aimed at discussing ways to expand economic cooperation, developing the longstanding and traditionally friendly relations and strengthening economic bonds between the two countries.

The online event offered participants the opportunity to analyze the current economic context and lay the groundwork for increased cooperation.

In addition, a special virtual B2B session was held on the same day where participants established direct contact, with an eye to exploring options for further cooperation and exchange.

In opening remarks at the beginning of the forum, Italian Ambassador to Tehran Giuseppe Perrone highlighted Italy’s wish to put economic and trade relations with Iran back on a positive trajectory.

Appreciating the Iranian private sector’s commitment and professionalism, he noted that the ties between the two countries are deep and historical.

He added that a significant number of Italian companies that have, over the years, built strong relationships in Iran are now looking forward to the opportunity of further expanding cooperation with Iranian counterparts.

In an address to the same event, Masoud Khansari, the TCCIMA’s chairman, encouraged participants to count on and renew focus on Iran’s enormous economic potential and develop effective partnerships with the country’s companies by, among other things, seizing the opportunities available in the broader region.

Khansari also highlighted the special role Italy has always played as a key partner of the Iranian private sector in trade and investment activities, expressing hope that Italian companies would continue to be a reference point for their Iranian counterparts.

The event also included a presentation by experts from the European Union of new tools made available to facilitate trade between European companies and Iranian firms.

IMSRT’s Director-General for Research and Technology Affairs Abdolsadeh Neisy said on Sunday that plans are underway to boost cooperation between Iran and Italy in science and research projects.

He added that “establishing a joint workgroup with CNR – which is the highest research council of Italy – is high on the agenda of the Iranian Science Ministry.”

The official noted that joint meetings have been held in this regard to explore the common interests of both sides.

According to Neisy, the upcoming meetings will be held, with the participation of a number of Iranian and Italian university professors to discuss their main concerns, including technology transfer as well as sharing research knowledge and expertise between the two countries’ academia.

Iran and Italy have held longstanding ties in academic and scientific fields. The first edition of Iran–Italy Science, Technology and Innovation Forum was held in Tehran in 2017. The event covered a wide range of topics, discussions and a platform on boosting scientific, economic and cultural exchanges between Italy and Iran.

Iranian universities have established broad academic cooperation with counterparts from different countries.

Last month, Polish Ambassador to Iran Maciej Falkowski, in a visit to the Tehran-based Amir Kabir University of Technology (AUT), voiced his country’s eagerness to expand academic cooperation with Iranian universities.

In October, a senior delegation from Iran’s Islamic Azad University (IAU) sealed agreements with a number of German universities and academic centers to launch joint programs for training professional engineers.

In September, the University of Gilan and Azerbaijan’s Technical University sealed an agreement to broaden academic cooperation and run joint research projects.

Earlier in September, Iran’s Tehran University and the Beijing-based Communication University of China (CUC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further increase academic cooperation in areas of exchanging students and professors as well as establishing joint cooperation in research-based fields.

In August, Payam Nour University, Iran’s leading academic center in distance learning, and Thailand’s Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University sealed an agreement to expand bilateral academic cooperation in diverse.

Late in June, An Iranian research center, Iranian Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies (IIHCS), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a German university, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), to conduct joint research projects and expand academic cooperation, as the two countries have reached countless agreements of similar content in the past couple of years.

Early in June, Iranian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Majid Saber and Kazakh Minister of Education and Science Kulyash Nogataevna Shamshidinova, in a meeting on Friday, discussed promoting scientific and educational cooperation.

In May, officials of Iranian Technical and Vocational University and German University of Applied Sciences exchanged views on ways to broaden academic and educational cooperation and vowed to increase bilateral ties with exchange programs and joint projects.

Also in May, Tehran and Tbilisi studied avenues to broaden bilateral relations in academic and scientific fields, between the two countries’ universities.

In Early March, Iran’s Tabriz and Turkey’s Gazi universities voiced their determination to broaden academic cooperation with sealing MoUs through exchanging students and professors and conducting joint research projects.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Italian Ambassador to Iran Giuseppe Perrone, in a meeting with Chairman of Tehran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIMA) Masoud Khansari, said that Italian firms and companies are enthusiastic to have a bigger share in Iran’s market.

Two sides are interested in developing bilateral relations, Perrone said during his Saturday meeting with Khansari, adding that Italian firms are still keen to be active in the Iranian market and are present at most of the exhibitions held at the Tehran International Permanent Fairground.

An Italian trade delegation traveled to Iran recently to negotiate with some Iranian companies which demonstrate Italy’s interest in maintaining and developing relations with Iran, he noted.

The embassy tries to help Italian and Iranian companies gain a better and deeper understanding of the two countries’ markets and find areas of cooperation, Perrone highlighted.

Emphasizing the need to improve banking relations between the two countries, the envoy said Italy is trying to maintain the communication channels with Iran despite all the controls on banking relations.

In this regard, an Italian banking delegation will come to Iran in the near future, he added.

Italian ambassador stressed the need for continued communication between the Tehran Chamber of Commerce and the Italian Embassy in order to coordinate the implementation of joint programs and efforts to remove small and large barriers to the development of economic and commercial relations between the two countries.

Khansari, for his part, said that unfortunately, the political and economic relations between Iran and Italy have been affected recently by sanctions and significantly reduced.

The Tehran Chamber of Commerce welcomes any cooperation with the Italian Embassy and the private sector to develop cooperation, he added.

He expressed hope that the Italian Embassy facilitates the relationship between businesspersons of the two countries, as well as reduces the impact of the sanctions on economic relations.

Although sanctions have created problems for the Iranian economy and have slowed foreign trade and economic growth, it has also led to a greater focus on domestic capabilities and efforts to boost domestic production and increase non-oil exports, he said, adding that the elimination of tariffs or putting preferential tariffs will boost exports between Iran and Italy.

Last month, Perrone voiced his country’s willingness to develop mutual cooperation with Iran in different fields, specially in economic and trade areas.

He said that the Italian private sector and companies are very interested to increase their cooperation with their Iranian counterparts.

“Iranian designers are really creative and today’s ceremony is not only seeking to display works of an Italian company, but also highlight history of the two countries’ exchanges in the field of designing,” the Italian envoy added.

He noted that most of the Italian companies attend the Iranian exhibitions and a large number of them are working in Iran.

Seven Italian companies participated in the International Exhibition of Agricultural Machinery and equipment held in Shahr-e Aftab from September 24-27.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – 60th anniversary of Iran-Italy collaboration in cultural heritage and archaeology will be celebrated in a conference, which will be held on Sunday at the National Museum of Iran in downtown Tehran.

Amongst invitees to the event are Iran’s tourism minister Ali-Asghar Mounesan, Italian Ambassador to Iran Giuseppe Perrone and tens of cultural heritage experts, archaeologists, restorers, and media personnel, IRIB reported on Thursday.

Organized by Iran’s Research Institute of Cultural Heritage & Tourism, the conference of Iran-Italy collaboration in cultural heritage is aimed to discuss four main areas of Iranian cultural heritage, namely; archaeological findings relative to prehistorical times, the ones that are liked with Achaemenid-era, ones linked to Parthian and Sassanid times, and the field of conservation.

An Iranian and an Italian expert, who have previously collaborated in each of the aforementioned fields, will deliver lectures during the conference, the report said.

On the same day, an archaeological exhibition dedicated to the 60th year of partnership will be inaugurated at the museum. The exhibit will be running through December 1.

From the early 20th century on, according to Encyclopedia Iranica, Italians participated in the scholarly investigation of ancient Iranian history and culture, most notably Ugo Monneret de Villard, but Italy’s direct involvement in field archeology in Iran dates from relatively recent times. The first agreement between the Iranian Archeological Services and the Institute for the Middle and Far East (Istituto Italiano per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente, IsMEO, q.v.) was reached only in 1959. Under its learned and dynamic director, Giuseppe Tucci (q.v.), IsMEO had already started archeological research in Pakistan (1956) and Afghanistan (1957).

Since 1960 the Center for Archeological Excavation has organized large-scale excavations in the region of Sistan; the Center for Conservation carried out especially significant research at Persepolis and Isfahan.

Conservation and restoration work at Persepolis began in 1964. In 1965 it came under the guidance of the conservation expert Giuseppe Tilia, who worked with his wife, A. B. Pettersson-Tilia, on all aspects of preliminary site research, as well as on restoration.

Italian archeology in Iran is not limited to IsMEO, for from the mid-1970s other Italian institutions also established field research projects in various regions of Iran. In 1976 the University of Turin participated in a joint program with the University Museum of Pennsylvania and the Iranian Center for Archeological Research, known as the Hesar Restudy Project; it was undertaken out of a need to study this fundamental site, uncovered in the region of Damgan during the 1930s, more thoroughly.

From 1976 to 1978 Italian researchers from the Institute of Mycenaean and Aegean-Anatolian Studies (a branch of the National Research Council [Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche]) conducted surface surveys, directed by P. E. Pecorella and M. Salvini, in the Urmia and Usnaviye plains, as well as in the area between Lake Urmia and the Zagros Mountains in Iranian Azerbaijan.

An important highlight of Italian archeological work in Iran lies in the area of paleobotanical research, which formed part of the studies in Sistan and later at Tepe Yahya, Tepe Hesar, Qal’a-ye Esma’il Aqa, and Tepe Gijlar.
