Referendum poll in Uzbekistan on Sunday witnessed a historic turnout by Uzbek people as more than 84.5% eligible voters turned out in this biggest political event in the country and the country enters a new era.

TASHKENT – Referendum poll in Uzbekistan on Sunday witnessed a historic turnout by Uzbek people as more than 84.5% eligible voters turned out in this biggest political event in the country and the country enters a new era.

Son Monday, the chairman of Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan announced the results of referendum in the country. He said that 16.67m out of almost 19.5 eligible voters cast their ballots which is a landslide turnout in the contemporary political event of the country.

He added that 90.21% voted in favor of renewing the Constitution and only 9.35% were opposed it.

Polls were conducted in 55 places overseas while in Uzbekistan it involves 10,758 centers.

Those 18 and above were eligible to cast their votes answering a simple question of “Do you accept the constitutional law regarding the constitution of the Uzbekistan Republic, with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer.

Around 500 foreign guests including as well as foreign journalists were in Uzbekistan for the coverage of this historic referendum.

Now with approval of the nation, Uzbekistan will see a transition to broader social reforms and freedom of expression and the country will face a new horizon ahead.

The referendum on the amendments to the constitution is part of various broad reforms being implemented by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev since becoming interim President in September 2016, elected in an open election with huge majority in the 2016 presidential election, following the death of Uzbekistan’s long-time leader Islam Karimov.
