TEHRAN (Iran News) – Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met in Damascus on Saturday.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in the Syrian capital at the head of a delegation earlier today.

Upon arrival at Damascus airport, Amirabdollahian was accorded welcome by his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad.

Mikdad in a press statement described the visit of Abdollahian as very important that comes after a lot of local, regional and international developments.

“We stand by Iran in the nuclear file and we support its stance in this regard,” Mikdad said.

In Damascus, Amirabdollahian said that the Zionists are seeking to destabilize Syria and increase Syrians’ problems.

Upon his arrival in Damascus, Amirabdollahian told reporters that the Syrian president’s recent visit to Tehran marks a new milestone in relations between the two states.

Referring to the importance of his visit to Syria, the top Iranian diplomat added that Iran and Syria are in a new phase of comprehensive cooperation, including in various economic and trade areas.

He highlighted that today is a great opportunity to discuss with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mikdad the latest situation in relations between the two states.

Iran strongly condemns the attempts of the Zionist regime and their aggression on the territorial integrity of Syria, Amirabdollahian stressed, adding that the Zionists seek to destabilize and increase the problems of the people who are returning to their cities and homes in Syria along with the sanctions imposed against the Syrians and Resistance.

The Syrian people, government, and leadership are acting strongly in defending the territorial integrity of their country, he said.

Iran understands Turkey’s concerns on security issues and strongly opposes any military attempts with any justification, he underscored, adding that Iran works to resolve the existing misunderstandings between Turkey and Syria through diplomacy and political dialogue.

Last week, the Syrian Minister of Agriculture extended his gratitude to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as well as the Iranian nation and government for assistance in a slew of construction projects in the Arab country.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 42nd edition of Damascus International Flowers Fair on June 26, Mohammad Hassan Qatana commended Iran for its support in wheat silos’ construction, and for building a number of dams, roads, and highways in Syria.
