TEHRAN – Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Head Mohammad Rastad says three shipping lanes are currently active between Iran’s Chabahar Port and India which is an important factor for the rise in the transit.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday and on the sidelines of inaugurating port and marine projects, Rastad said that one of the biggest projects of this government came into operation proudly was development of Chabahar which could adjust itself with the demands. He added, despite the major effect of Coronavirus pandemic on the global economy, the region and Iran’s ports, Chabahar Port has grown 100 percent and it has registered 180 percent increase in the transit and 38 percent in exports of the non-oil exports.

He further said three shipping lanes are active between Chabahar and India which is an important factor for the increase of transit, adding that the created climate in the port has been accompanied with the growth and it was necessary that the infrastructures should increase in accordance with the trend of demand for marine access. Rastad went on to say that in line with this action, the development of hinterlands began and necessary equipment was provided in order to experience bright and good future in the port.

He further said that our major concern is that simultaneous with the growth and development of marine access, the capacities of hinterlands should be developed for rail, road and airport in order that this process could be exploited in the best way possible with full readiness.

Rastad added in the set horizon for the port, the 8 million-ton capacity has been planned for the first phase of Chabahar Port, and 30 million-ton capacity for the second phase.

He further said that accession of Shahid Beheshti Port to Chabahar Port is a big achievement that witnessed a good interaction in the form of a MoU between the PMO, as the custodian, and Chabahar Free Trade Zone.

Rastad concluded that the measures and plans in the Chabahar Port have turned it into one of the most important multifunctional terminals and it has been one of the most successful port models.
