TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Moscow late on Wednesday to discuss 2015 nuclear deal and major regional developments with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

Earlier in the day, Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said that Zarif and Sergei Lavrov are to exchange views on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) five years after it was clinched between Iran and six world powers, IRNA reported.

Zarif’s previous visit to Moscow took place in July.

Referring to Russia as a supporter of the JCPOA, Jalali said Iran and Russia are in full solidarity against US anti-humanitarian and unilateral sanctions.

Russian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov in a tweet on Sunday termed as “unjustifiable” all US claims that previous UN sanctions are re-imposed on Iran and threatens that all those who disagree with the US national interpretation of snapback will be punished.

Trump administration said it is “snapping back” virtually all UN sanctions on Iran lifted under the nuclear accord with Tehran, negotiated under former president Barack Obama but which Trump abandoned in 2018.

Washington says it can reimpose the sanctions because it is still a “participant” in the accord, officially referred to as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but the remaining parties of the nuclear deal (E3, Russia and China) denounce the position as legally untenable.
