Second 5G Site Launched in Tehran

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A week after the first trial in Iran for the high-speed 5G mobile Internet technology, the second testing site was launched on Tuesday.

Iran’s second-largest mobile operator MTN Irancell unveiled the 5G site in Tehran, which was attended by the managing director of the telecom company, IRNA reported.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony, MTN Irancell Managing Director Bijan Abbasi said that, today, when we talk about digital economy, with the use of the new generation technology, it seems that the share of digital economy in the country will increase.

“We are not just looking for importing new technology, and we are trying to bring technology by the help of Iranian new technology-based firms (NTBF),” he said.

Abbasi pointed to the indigenization of the 5G communication modem and said, “The production of this modem has been ordered by our company and will be produced by an Iranian NTBF.”

An Iranian deputy communications and information technology (CIT) minister said on July 22 that a first trial in the country for the high-speed 5G mobile Internet technology has been successfully carried out in a laboratory in Tehran.

Sattar Hashemi said the test conducted in the CIT Research Center in Tehran had reached a speed of 1.5 gigabits per second (Gb/s).

“The 5G is a major improvement on 4G regarding the delay in sending information and we managed to reduce the delay by five to six milliseconds in this test,” Hashemi told Mehr News Agency.

He said high-ranking government officials would soon hold a ceremony to officially unveil 5G in the country and announce the terms of its regulation and pricing system.

Previous statements by CIT officials have suggested that Iran’s largest mobile operator, MCI, would launch a first batch of 5G masts in at least six locations in Tehran by the end of summer.
