TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya expressed concern over US maximum pressure against Iran while addressing a UN virtual meeting on implementation of the Security Council’s Resolution 2231 on Tuesday.
“US policy of imposing unilateral sanctions seems to ignore other countries. We are concerned about developments in the US policy of maximum pressure against Iran which can better be termed as maximum suffocation,” Russian Nebenzya said according to a report by Mehr News Agency (MNA).
“Iran is under pressure from all sides. The goal is to change the ruling system or create a situation in which Iran is literally unable to breathe. It’s like putting your knee on someone’s neck. This crisis has been caused by the United States,” said the Russian envoy.
He also expressed Russia’s opposition to US efforts to extend Iran arms embargo.
Despite of unilaterally withdrawing from the nuclear deal in 2018, US has lately sought to urge other signatories of the 2015 historic nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), to renew an embargo on the sales of conventional weapons to Iran that will expire under the nuclear deal in October.
Addressing the same event via a videoconference from Tehran, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif referred to US as an “outlaw bully” and warned the UNSC that giving in to Washington’s pressure threatens to restore the “law of the jungle,” Presstv.com reported.
He stressed, “The international community in general, and the United Nations Security Council, in particular, are facing an important decision.”
“If this council falters again, it will be a generational setback for the cause of multilateralism, and the rule of law,” Zarif warned.
Recalling US mounting pressures against Iran, Zarif wondered how come the UN had come to pick on Iran while “not a single” Council session has been convened to address the US’s egregious violation.
