TEHRAN (Iran News) – Persepolis Irish forward Anthony Stokes says that he has not returned to Iran because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The 31-year-old forward was supposed to join Persepolis one day after the Iranian team met Emirati side Sharjah in the AFC Champions League on February 18 but went AWOL.
Now, Stokes has broken his silence after about one month.
“Let me be clear. I have not left Persepolis. I was in Dubai and all flights to and from Iran were stopped, the borders were also closed. I could not get into the country because of the coronavirus outbreak. Now in Iran, all my clubs’ games and social events have been ceased while they try to contain the virus spreading. I am just waiting to make sure it’s safe to return. Simple as that. I have no intentions of traveling to a country until I know it is 100% safe, anyone in my position would do exactly the same thing,” he wrote in a post published on his Instagram.
