Major Decisions Taken to Boost Iran-Qatar Ties: Rouhani

According To Iran News, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated his administration’s resolve to deepen the country’s relations with Qatar and said major decisions were taken during his Sunday meeting with the Arab country’s visiting emir to boost the ties.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Tehran on Sunday, Rouhani pointed to the sanctions imposed by some regional Arab states against Doha and said, “We have sided with Qatar and will do so in the future.”

“In today’s negotiations, we made important decisions to develop the two countries’ relations,” he said, adding, “Our political relations are very good, and we have great capacities in economic, cultural and business relations.”

“In the next few months, a joint (economic) commission will be formed, and in addition to the commission, we hope to reach good agreements on trade and technology cooperation between the two countries,” the Iranian president went on to say.

The Qatari emir, for his part, said his trip to Iran has taken place at a critical time in the region, adding that he believes the only solution to regional problems is dialogue.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Qatari emir arrived in Tehran and was officially welcomed by top Iranian officials, including Rouhani.

The visit to Tehran comes amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf following the US assassination of top Iranian commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad and Iran’s retaliatory missile strikes at US targets in Iraq.

On Thursday, Sheikh Tamim phoned Rouhani to discuss the latest developments in the region and ways to ensure security and stability regionally and internationally.
