According To Iran News, More than 200 Iranian lawmakers have called on the administration to take a rapid decision about British Ambassador to Tehran Rob Macaire after his illegal presence in an anti-government rally in the capital, an MP said.

“These days people are calling on the parliament to specify the status of the British ambassador to Iran; the dear nation of Iran should know that the parliament has passed a law (in this regard),” Hamid Reza Hajibabaei said at an open session of the parliament on Sunday.

According to the one-article law, the Foreign Ministry is obliged to reduce political relations with the British government to the level of charge d’affaires within two weeks and to minimize economic and commercial relations in line with efforts to defend national interests and the rights of the Iranian people, he stated.

“Today more than 200 MPs are demanding that the administration determine the status of the British ambassador to Iran under the law,” the lawmaker went on to say.

Iranian Police released footage that shows Macaire taking part in an illegal gathering in the capital on January 11.

Macaire was arrested after he tried to “provoke and organize” an anti-government gathering held in front of Amir Kabir University in Tehran, according to an informed security source.

“The British ambassador was detained in accordance with the law for being illegally present (in the protest) in violation of diplomatic norms and while he was acting against the country’s security,” the source said last Sunday.

The British diplomat was handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then was released.
