TEHRAN – Tehran Mayor Pirouz Hanachi says the municipality has plans to organize valley rivers of Tehran in order to prevent probable natural disasters.

Speaking at inaugural ceremony of three management crisis projects of Tehran, Hanachi pointed to the comprehensive and detailed project of the municipality for reviving and organizing the Valley Rivers in the city, adding that in the first stage, the municipality will start organizing the route of Farahzad Valley River.

He further said that annually over 240m cubic meters of water from Alborz Province transfers into Tehran’s qanats but most of them have been demolished and in most of them, waste water is flowing.

Hanachi added that as soon as possible, the municipality would start dredging them because qanats should return to its vital cycle.

He further said that dredging the flood route, timely presence and urban management in March prevented the city from probable disaster because of heavy rains.

Hanachi reiterated today besides inaugurating the crisis management projects, they witnessed cooperation of all related bodies which is a positive point. He noted that if all organizations and bodies put aside their passiveness and weakness, they can double their capabilities by working together.

He also warned that Tehran is prone to earthquakes and in facing with them there are two options of being afraid of it or preparing to tackle it.

Hanachi further said that according to international study, investing any one dollar on the crisis management project will save some $40 during any natural disaster.

He also pointed to the air pollution in Tehran which led to closure of schools last week, adding that pollution usually increases in in November and December due to conversion, adding that source of pollution has been identified and all should work to reduce it.

He also called for taking advantage of other countries for reducing air pollution in the country.

Hanachi went on to say that Tehran Municipality has plans to renovate public transportation fleet and to add more electric bus to the fleet, expressing hope that the first batch of these buses would join the fleet very soon. He also reiterated that municipality is to increase the number of wagons for metro by 50 percent.

He went on to say that the municipality has banned any construction activities on the quake-prone areas, adding that it can lead to heavy casualty in case of quake.

Hanachi also warned that Tehran expects two major probable quake and flood and all should be vigilant.
