TEHRAN (Iran News) – Kuwait says its foreign policy is based on respecting the sovereignty of other countries after Iran summoned its envoy to protest a conference between the Arab country’s officials and a representative of an anti-Iran terrorist group, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

The director-general for the Persian Gulf Affairs of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Alireza Enayati, on Saturday summoned the Kuwaiti chargé d’affaires to Tehran to protest the meeting and convey Iran strong objection to the Kuwait which was hosting of a conference against the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian official stressed the importance of observing the principle of mutual respect in bilateral relations and said, “Such a move is a clear interference in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran and a breach of the principle of good neighborliness as well as friendly remarks by the Kuwaiti officials.”

He added that the move was also in contravention of the principle of respect for territorial integrity and national sovereignty of countries.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry did not provide any more details about the group concerned or about which Kuwaiti officials had met the group’s representative.

However, the speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, Marzouq al-Ghanim, has reportedly met with a member of the al-Ahwaziya terrorist group on the sidelines of a parliamentary conference calling for the breakaway of the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz from the country.

Following Iran’s reaction to the meeting in Kuwait, the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah held a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to Kuwait Mohammad Irani on Sunday.

Al-Jarallah stressed that Kuwait’s foreign policy is based on good-neighborliness, non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs as well as respecting the neighbors’ sovereignty.

According to IRNA, Khalil Abul, a Kuwaiti lawmaker, has also criticized the government for hosting the anti-Iran meeting, calling it a dangerous move.

Taking such measures will not be to Kuwait’s benefit, said Abdul, adding that official support of an armed group that is against a neighboring country was not acceptable.
