TEHRAN – Iranians have held rallies in various cities to mark the 40th occupation anniversary of the former US embassy in Tehran, which gained notoriety as the “Den of Spies” after angry students occupied the compound and recovered thousands of documents proving Washington’s espionage activities there.

In the capital Tehran, students joined a large gathering staged outside the former embassy building from the early hours of morning to honor what is regarded as a milestone in Iran’s ongoing fight against the world arrogance.

The demonstrators expressed their opposition to the global hegemony by chanting slogans against the United States and Israel and set their flags on fire in condemnation of their policies of creating havoc in other countries.

The embassy was taken over by hundreds of students on November 4, 1979, nearly nine months after the Islamic Revolution dethroned the U.S.-backed Pahlavi regime.

Addressing the ceremony in Tehran, Commander of Iran’s Army Major General Seyed Abdolrahim Mousavi hailed the Iranian nation’s unity and resistance in the face of external challenges, saying the takeover of the U.S. embassy in 1979 destroyed Washington’s fictitious grandeur.

“Kneeling before the enemies and obeying them will never have any achievements for the Iranian nation and the Islamic Revolution,” General Mousavi added in an address to the public rallies in Tehran on Monday, held to mark the 40th anniversary of the U.S. embassy takeover in Tehran.

“The U.S. embassy takeover was one of the most prominent movements in the history of the world’s revolutions that marred the fake image of the imperialists and the U.S.,” he added.

The Army chief added that “on November 4, 1979, the Iranian nation proved to the world that no arrogant and non-divine power can stand against the will of the nations.”

Major General Mousavi called on people to continue the path of resistance in the face of the enemies’ plots, saying that the strategy of “active resistance” has rendered the enemies inactive and lack of will.

He said that the enemies have suffered irreversible deterioration and their strategic resources are at an end.

Thousands of Iranian demonstrators have issued a statement at the end of rallies on the 40th anniversary of the former U.S. embassy takeover, branding Washington “deceitful” and “mankind’s biggest enemy.”

Students on Monday joined people from all backgrounds to express their opposition to America’s policy of destabilizing other nations.

The demonstration was dominated by a chorus of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” chants by the people present at the venue.

Some of the protesters carried signs with Farsi inscriptions that stated “America on Decline” and “America will soon collapse.”

They also named the current Persian year as the year of America’s decline, referring to recent remarks by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei that the US is on “decline” in terms of power and clout.

Iranian rally-goers also took aim at the Al Saud family for waging a war against the people of Yemen, killing thousands of Yemenis and putting millions of them in the throes of famine since 2015.

The demonstrators wrapped up the nationwide event by issuing a statement that doubled down on Iran’s will to stand up to global arrogance.

The statement called the takeover of the embassy a “genius” and “revolutionary” move that needed to be discussed in universities and schools to familiarize the youths with America’s atrocities against Iran.

“We still view the declining and collapsing America as the number one enemy of the mankind,” the statement noted, adding both the U.S. and its European allies are “untrustworthy.”

They also condemned the “child murdering” regime of Israel as well as the Al Saud regime for their attempts to sow division in the Islamic World.

The demonstrators further reiterated their support for the people of Palestine in the face of Israel’s ongoing occupation of their lands.
