TEHRAN (Iran News) – The spokesman for the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said the IRGC Quds has been working in cooperation with the Iraqi security forces to ensure safety of pilgrims visiting the Arab country for Arbaeen.

Speaking to Radio Arbaeen on Thursday, General Ramezan Sharif said the security of Arbaeen pilgrims on Iraqi soil is protected by the Iraqi security forces, the Hashd al-Shaabi – also known as Popular Mobilization Units, and the IRGC Quds Force. Iran News quotes.

The general also noted that the Iranian Police, intelligence and security forces, backed by the Basij and IRGC members, are working to ensure security of the pilgrims inside Iran.

Highlighting the failure of hostile plans to overshadow the large gathering of people in Arbaeen and harm the unity between the two nations in the wake of the recent unrest in Iraq, Sharif said the plot has been thwarted, and the Arbaeen procession and mourning ceremonies are being held more magnificently this year with a higher number of pilgrims.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of people flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein is located, to perform mourning rites.

In a message on Sunday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said enemies’ plots aimed at driving a wedge between Iran and Iraq are doomed to failure as the two nations are tied together through faith in God and love for Imam Hussein (AS).

The comments come against the backdrop of several days of protests against mismanagement and corruption in Iraq, with certain demonstrations descending into violence and clashes.
