Tehran Ready to Host Biggest Handmade Carpet Exhibition
TEHRAN – Head of Iran National Carpet Center Fereshteh Dastpak says almost 80 percent of the handmade carpets of Iran are exported, adding that carpet is the second major sanctioned goods of Iran after its oil.

Speaking at a press conference on the eve of the 28th Iran Handmade Carpet Exhibition, Ms. Dastpak said that over 2m people are involved in the carpet industry in the country, adding that the country can create value-added with the least investment in this sector.

She said since carpet is a one-hundred percent Iranian good and this year has been named as pick-up of production, the center has special programs for the exhibition.

She noted that 80 percent of national handmade carpets are exported as the carpet is after oil the second good which has been sanctioned, admitting that exports to the U.S. has decreased by 29% due to sanctions.

On exports of carpet to Germany, she said the volume of carpet export to Germany is 12 percent. She added since there are huge stores for handmade carpets in Hamburg and activity of the carpet union, Iran has preserved the current volume of exports to Germany.

Dastpak admitted that forex problems and hurdles in banking interactions due to sanctions have affected this sector and the center is working to find some replacement markets like ASEAN countries.

She added there will be about 850 pavilions in this year’s exhibitionwhere the best handmade carpets will be put on display and four biggest integrated carpets will be unveiled in the exhibition.

She added that the exhibition will be inaugurated by President or First Vice-President and a special website on the handmade carpets and related information is to be unveiled in the opening day.

Dastpak went on to say that so far 34 foreign carpet traders have enrolled to participate in the exhibition.

On the return of forex resulted from exports, she said carpet exporters have seven months to return the forex to the country, adding that talks are underway for the deadline to be extended to one year.

The 28th Iran Handmade Carpet Exhibition will be held on August 25-31 at Tehran’s Permanent Fairground.
