General Warns of Due Response to UK Tanker Seizure
TEHRAN - Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri has warned that the Islamic Republic will respond to the UK’s seizure of an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar in due time.

Addressing a Tuesday ceremony in Tehran, General Baqeri said the Iranian supertanker has been seized based on “false pretexts” and in retaliation for Iran’s brave move against the U.S. spy drone.

“The UK’s move will not remain unanswered, and in due time and place, we’ll consider responding to the cowardly move, if necessary,” he added.

“The enemy has failed to achieve its goals and it has been so much humiliated that it doesn’t know how to act,” he added.

“We are neither afraid of war, nor embrace it. Iranian Armed Forces, under the command of Islamic Revolution Leader, are ready with fingers on trigger to respond to any hostile measure of the enemy.”

Major General Baqeri also commented on the economic sanctions and pressures on Iran, saying they are incentive for the country to become self-sufficient.

“Today is time for hitting the peak of power and deterrence.”

Baqeri further dismissed enemies’ media and psychological warfare against the Iranian people and officials.

The high level of Iran’s deterrent power was proved when the Iranian forces shot down the US drone which had violated the Iranian airspace, Major General Baqeri said.

The issue that the U.S.  drone was downed by a weapon built by young Iranian experts is very important because it could change the enemies’ equations, Baqeri said.

Gibraltar police and customs agencies, aided by a detachment of British Royal Marines, boarded and impounded supertanker Grace 1, carrying Iranian oil, in the Strait of Gibraltar on Thursday, upon a request from the United States.

While the UK claims it has seized the tanker on the pretext that it was carrying oil to Syria in breach of the EU sanctions against the Arab country, Iran says it was not bound for Syria, and the UK was not allowed to seize it.
