TEHRAN – Iran has turned to other sources of revenues and tourism is one of them which has forced the country to invest over $12b in its tourism sector, Ali Asghar Mounesan, head of Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO).

Addressing the opening ceremony of the 12th Tehran International Tourism Exhibition at the capital city’s International Fairgrounds yesterday, Mounesan said that tourism industry in the country has bright future ahead as the number of foreign tourists to the country is on the rise. He said in the first nine months of the current year over 6m tourists have visited Iran and it is expected the figure to hit 7m by the yearend.

He reiterated that tourism is multifunctional and it can boost social and cultural bonds between people of other countries with Iranian excluding its economic benefit.

Mounesan noted that there are several enthusiast investors who are willing to invest in tourism sector, adding that so far over $12b have been invested on 2,000 projects in the industry.

The four-day exhibition opened yesterday with participants from 12 countries showcasing their product in the event.

Organized by Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO), the event is hosting 660 domestic and foreign companies from 12 countries.

Representatives of Italy, Turkey, Malaysia, Germany, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Cambodia, Afghanistan and Pakistan have attended the exhibition.

The pavilions are comprised of airlines, travel agencies, tour operators, hotels, hospitals and other related industries, including banks and insurance companies, publications, free zones, sports and ecotourism facilities, as well as online services.

ICHTTO has devised over 100 different packages to introduce the less famous tourism destinations of Iran during the event.

The exhibition is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 17 p.m., with folk music and ritual performances. The event will end Friday (Feb. 15).
