The head of Food and Drug Administration says that the government has so far provided enough foreign currency to import medical needs and there is currently no problem in allocating foreign currency to that sector.

Gholamreza Asgari, the head of Food and Drug Administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which operates under the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said Saturday that “a total of $3.5 billion has been allocated to import medicine and medical equipment, of which $2 billion has been set aside to import drug and pharmaceutical raw materials and the other $1.5 billion to import medical equipment.”

According to the Public Relations Department of Iran’s Food and Drug Administration, Asgari further said that a total of $1.6 billion has been supplied by the government so far, of which $600 million has been spent on importing raw materials for pharmaceuticals and the other $1 billion on importing medicine.

He added that $1.1 billion has also been allocated to import medical equipment, leaving only $800 million to import medicine and medical equipment that will be allocated over time.

The medical official noted that “there is currently no problem in allocating foreign currency to medical needs by the government.”

Also in this regard, the Iranian health minister said early last week that the country is in a good condition in terms of meeting medical needs despite the sanctions, adding “while the United States claims that they have not imposed sanctions on our pharmaceuticals, Iranians and people of the world know that their claim is baseless.”
