The shelling of Aleppo with toxic gases is aimed at disrupting normalization in Syria, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Sunday, calling on the international community to condemn this terrorist attack.

“The shelling of a peaceful city of Aleppo, which was carried out by terrorists and militants from the areas controlled by them, is an attempt to undermine the process of normalization in Syria, which should be definitely condemned by the entire global community,” Zakharova told Tass news agency, noting that this could have been a chlorine attack.

Earlier, SANA news agency reported that at least 107 civilians were hospitalized after militants had fired shells at Aleppo containing toxic gases. Many cases of asphyxiation were reported.

On Saturday, Surya TV channel reported that the shelling targeted a crowded Nil Street, Al-Khalidiyah and Jam’ayat al-Zahra neighborhoods. Police blamed the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist group for the attack.

Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said Russian military chemical experts had arrived in Aleppo. According to the general, preliminary data indicates that chlorine was used in the attack.
