Back with the iPhone X, Apple started what it called a “head start” on pre-orders that would speed up the checkout process. It’s only for current members of the iPhone Upgrade Program and basically consists of pre-approval for the financing option that is provided by Citizens One.

Since this process can take some time, Apple is starting the same thing on the eve of the iPhone XR pre-order start this Friday. If you are a part of the iPhone Upgrade Program, Apple recommends that you use its Store app for the pre-approval application and then “speed through checkout on 10.19.”
To go through the pre-approval process, launch the Apple Store app and select the iPhone model you want to get. They start from $37.41 per month for the 64GB model, $39.50

per month for the 128GB one, and $43.66 for the top-shelf 256-gigger (sorry, no 512GB option here).

The end tags for these unlocked models are above what you’d pay full price, despite the zero interest rate, since these monthly payments include AppleCare+. Given the comparatively cheap LCD screen of the XR, that insurance makes a bit less sense than for the more expensive iPhone XS Max where a shattered screen will set you back $329.

The pre-approvals will be active until 4pm Pacific Time/7pm Eastern on this Thursday, 10/18, so fire up the app if you are a current iPhone Upgrade Program participant on the hunt for Apple’s cheapest 2018 iPhone.
