European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said that the European Union is doing its best to keep Iran benefiting from the economic advantages of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

She made the remarks on Tuesday in a joint press conference with New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters.

“We are doing our best to keep Iran in the deal, to keep Iran benefiting from the economic benefits that the agreement brings to the people of Iran because we believe this is in the security interests of not only our region, but also of the world,” Associated Press quoted her as saying.

She went on to say that trade between Iran and EU is a “fundamental aspect of the Iranian right to have an economic advantage in exchange for what they have done so far, which is being compliant with all their nuclear-related commitments.”

EU is encouraging small and medium companies to enhance business with Iran, Mogherini said, adding that trade is an integral part of JCPOA.

Highlighting on EU and New Zealand’s same stance towards preserving the deal, Mogherini added that they have thoroughly discussed how to keep trade and financial channels open with Iran.

In a Monday statement, the European guarantors of the Iran nuclear accord highlighted that they would issue an updated Blocking Statute today to protect EU companies doing business with Iran from US extra-territorial sanctions.
