Iran national football team, known as Team Melli, will be eager to translate its position as one of the Continent’s top teams by adding a fourth AFC Asian Cup title.
The 2019 AFC Asian Cup will be held from January 5 to February 1, 2019 in the United Arab Emirates.
Team Melli has been drawn in Group D along with rivals Iraq, Vietnam and Yemen.
Iran had a smooth World Cup qualifying campaign, emerging unbeaten to top Group A in the second round of qualification. Its only blemish were the 1-1 draws against Oman and Turkmenistan, the-afc.com wrote.
In the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, Iran finished third in Group B, behind Portugal and group winner Spain. Although disappointed by its first round exit, Iran impressed in Russia, scoring a 1-0 win against Morocco, falling 1-0 to Spain before coming very close to defeating European champion Portugal, eventually settling for a 1-1 draw.
