TEHRAN – Persepolis coach Branko Ivankovic has been shortlisted to take charge of Iraq football team, mawazin.net reported.

The Lions of Mesopotamia prepare for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 and want to hire the Croat.

Branko Ivankovic, who has led Persepolis to Iran Professional League (IPL) back-to-back title, is under contract with Persepolis until 2020.

“The association has started its initial contact with Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic. The Iraqis are hopeful of reaching agreement with him,” a source close to Iraq Football Association said.

Branko Ivankovic is the most expensive coach in the Iranian league.

Ivankovic also led Iran to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, the third time in the country’s history (they had previously been eliminated in the first round in 1978 and 1998).

Branko Ivankovic started his coaching career with Varteks in 1991 and has also worked at Rijeka, Hannover 96, Dinamo Zagreb, Shandong Luneng, Ettifaq and Al-Wahda.

Ivankovic was assistant of Ciro Blazevic, who led the Croatian national team to a sensational third-place finish at the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals in France.
