The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi said in Caracas that the US unilateralism and its withdrawal from international agreements indicate its imperialistic approach.

Sarmadi made the remarks in a meeting with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza in Caracas, during which the two diplomats discussed bilateral relations and exchanged their views on the regional and international issues.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister condemned the US unilateralism and its violations of international agreements, including its unlawful withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal known as the JCPOA, as a threat to world’s peace and security.

The Venezuelan foreign minister, for his part, expressed his country’s support for Iran’s position towards America hegemonic and imperialistic approach, saying that Venezuela has experienced the US’s oppressive policies itself, therefore it supports Iran’s policy in defending its sovereignty and integrity against US and western sanctions.

While denouncing the unilateralist policies of the US government, Arreaza considered its JCPOA unilateral withdrawal as a sign of disrespect for treaties and agreements that it had signed and accepted before.

He praised Iran’s strategic position in stabilizing the Middle East, while praising its role in the fight against terrorism.

In the meeting, the two sides also discussed ways to expand bilateral ties in the political, economic, commercial and cultural fields.

At the end of the meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister and Venezuelan Foreign Minister responded to questions put forward by reporters at a joint press conference.
