Iran seeking to co-produce defense equipment with Pakistan: Army chief of staff

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri, said on a visit to Pakistan today that Iran is trying to jointly manufacture defense equipment with the neighboring country.

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri met with Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain on the second day of his visit to the neighboring country on Tuesday morning.

In the meeting that took place at the Presidential Palace in Islamabad, the two sides hailed ample common backgrounds and the nearly 1,000 km long shared border between Iran and Pakistan and emphasized strengthening bilateral cooperation in different fields.

Referring to the topics that are going to be discussed between Iranian and Pakistani official during the visit, the Chief of the General Staff Iran’s Armed Forces said that a variety of military and defense issues such as military training, military aviation training as well as other areas of training, holding joint military drills and relations between two countries’ defense industries are being and will be discussed during the meetings.

Bagheri said that manufacturing defense products jointly with Pakistan as products of Islamic countries is also on the agenda.

The Iranian military official also met with Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, commander of the Pakistani navy, during which the two sides emphasized the expansion of maritime cooperation between Iran and Pakistan and holding joint naval exercises between the two countries.

The Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, who is in Pakistan at the invitation of the Pakistani army commander, also met with General Qamar Javed Bajawa, Pakistani Army Commander, as well as General Zubair Mahmoud Hayat, Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Army.

Bagheri also met with Abdullah Hussain Haroon, Caretaker Minister for Foreign Affairs at the Pakistani Foreign Ministry complex, during which the two sides emphasized the development of border relations and cooperation on the fight against terrorism.

The meeting between the Major General Bagheri and Pakistani military officials have largely focused on the fight against terrorism as well as increasing bilateral cooperation on shared border relations.
