Clinton Johnson led the hosts dropping 22 points. Mohamed Yousuf Mohammed and Mansour Elhadary also finished in double digits with 13 and 12 points respectively.

“We played well, we controlled the game until we gave five easy points to Iran which changed the complexion of the game,” Qatar coach Tim Lewis said.

“Iran are a perennial Asian contender. They play a lot of matches and have been battling the Australians for Asia’s top spot in the last few years,” he added.

Iran will face Kazakhstan in Group D in Tehran on Monday while Qatar play Iraq for a place in the next phase which will consist of 12 teams in two groups.

The top three teams in each group along with the better placed fourth team will qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
