The Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has said that Turkey will keep its trade relations with Iran despite US pressures.
Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu made the remarks in an interview with the Turkish new channel NTV, saying that Turkey will only follow United Nations’ resolutions.
In a clear reference to the United States, Çavuşoğlu said that Turkey will not listen to ‘the command of other countries,’ .
The Turkish foreign minister further said that it is true that the United States and Turkey are allies but “being allies does not mean it (Turkey) must follow its decisions.”
He said that If the United States’ decisions are helpful to the peace and stability, then “we’ll support them.”
“Iran is a good neighbor and we have economic ties. We will not severe our trade ties with Iran upon the request of other countries,” Çavuşoğlu asserted.
Also in this regard, Turkey’s Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said in an interview with Bloomberg that Ankara does not accept the US’s demand for stopping oil purchase from Iran, saying that as a neighboring country, Iran is one of Turkey’s most important trading partners, with significant bilateral economic bilateral agreements, including oil and gas.
Earlier this month, the American officials had also asked Japan to completely halt oil imports from Iran, the world media reported.
On May 8, 2018, the United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and reinstated its unilateral sanctions.
