The Popular Resistance Committees, a coalition of a number of armed Palestinian groups, said there would be no ceasefire as long as the Israeli regime’s attacks against Palestinians in the Gaza strip continue.

“As long as the occupying enemy (Israel) continues its crimes and attacks on the Gaza Strip, we will not accept any agreement or ceasefire,” the Popular Resistance Committees said in a statement on Wednesday, according to the Arabic-language al-Ahed news website.

The statement came after some media reports claimed on Wednesday that armed groups in the Gaza Strip had agreed to a deal with Israel following a night of air attacks targeting several Hamas and Islamic Jihad positions in the coastal enclave.

The Arabic-language al Mayadeen also reported on Wednesday that a new wave of Israeli attacks against the strip has begun.

Israeli media reports said sirens have been triggered in the occupied territories.

As Israel hit dozens of targets inside the Gaza Strip on Tuesday some 28 mortar shells were reportedly fired toward Israel from the enclave.

It was the largest barrage fired from Gaza targeting occupied territories since a 2014 war.

The UN Security Council is expected to meet Wednesday to discuss the attacks on Israel, following a request by the United States for an urgent meeting.
