TEHRAN – The Book City Institute in Tehran and two Italian universities plan to organize a conference on Persian poet Sadi (C. 1213-1291) and Italian scholar and poet Petrarch (1304-1374) in 2018.

A number of Iranian and Italian experts are expected to attend the conference in Tehran on April 18 and 19 to discuss affinities between the two poets, the institute announced on Sunday.

They will also hold a meeting in Shiraz on April 21 to commemorate Sadi National Day.

The Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Bologna will host the scholars for additional meetings in September.

One of the greatest figures of classical Persian literature, Sheikh Muslih ud-Din Sadi Shirazi is famous worldwide for his Bustan (The Orchard) and Gulistan (The Rose Garden).

Petrarch was born Francesco Petrarca in Arezzo, Tuscany. He was a devoted classical scholar who is considered the “Father of Humanism”, a philosophy that helped spark the Renaissance. Petrarch’s writing includes the well-known odes to Laura.
