Calling Lebanese President on phone following the surprise resignation of PM Saad Hariri, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani voiced confidence that Lebanon could easily move past this new scenario aimed at destabilizing the country.

Ties between Tehran and Beirut are friendly and developing, said president Hassan Rouhani in in a phone conversation with Lebanese President Michel Aoun.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always called for peace and stability in regional countries, especially Lebanon,” Rouhani added.

Asserting that the Lebanese nation, with all its political parties and different religious groups, has managed to surmount great obstacles through solidarity and harmony, Rouhani said “there is no doubt that the great nation of Lebanon will be able to pass through this new plot through tact and will not allow Lebanon to turn into a battlefield for world powers and terrorists.”

Rouhani was referring to the sudden resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri following his trip to Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Hariri’s decision to resign seems to have been influenced by his meetings with Saudi officials.

Referring to Lebanese president’s talks on the necessity of peace and stability and people’s awareness of the situation, Rouhani said “using your tact, direction and valuable experience, Lebanese army and nation will successfully maintain peace in your country.”

The Lebanese president, for his part, called for increasing and deepening Tehran-Beirut ties.

Noting the recent developments in Lebanon and the resignation of Prime Minister Hariri, Michel Aoun said “although the present situation is difficult, peace and stability are maintained in Lebanon and people are aware of the changes.”

“In general, the Lebanese are in peace in spite of some very weak voices that want to create tensions in Lebanon,” he added.

The Lebanese president also expressed hope for an official visit to Tehran as soon as possible.
