TEHRAN – Syria’s army and its allies continued to make gains in the military campaign against Daesh (ISIL) in Homs, managing to liberate several areas from the control of the terror group in the central province.

Syrian forces on Monday established control over the villages of al-Qasimiyeh, al-Shemalieh, Rabe’a, and Mghezel northeast of Jub al-Jarrah in Homs eastern countryside, SANA news agency reported.

Large groups of the Takfiri militants were killed during the clashes.

The latest developments came after army troops repelled a major attack by the terrorists in al-Soukhna town, east of Palmyra city in Homs province.

In a separate development, Syrian warplanes pounded the positions of the militants in the areas of Mohassan, al-Mayadin, Buqros al-Tahtani and Taibat Shamiya in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor province.

The raids claimed the lives of a number of militants there, according to the report.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
