TEHRAN – Iranian director Hossein Parsai will stage a musical version of “Oliver Twist” in Tehran’s Vahdat Hall in late November.

The musical will be an adaptation based on “Oliver!”, a 1968 British musical drama film directed by Carol Reed, Parsai had told the Persian service of Hamshahri Online earlier.

A large ensemble including 150 actors and musicians will perform in the play.

Dramaturge Mohammadreza Kuhestani, stage designer Siamak Ehsai and costume designer Shima Mir-Hamidi will also collaborate in the project.

The musical will be produced by Harir-e Honar-e Sharq.

Parsai had earlier announced a few years ago that he had plans to stage the play, but the project was halted to await better conditions.

“Oliver Twist”, the second novel by English author Charles Dickens (1812-1870), tells the story of the orphan Oliver Twist, who is born in a workhouse and is then sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. He escapes from there and travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal, Fagin.
