TEHRAN – Iran’s Bahram Ghasemi said that the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly is a good chance for discussing the issue of Myanmar.

“Regarding the responsibility the Islamic Republic of Iran bears about the Muslims of the world, we will concentrate the whole of our efforts for restoring the rights of this population of Muslims in Myanmar,” said Bahram Ghasemi, the Spokesperson of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Tuesday.

“In the past, this issue has been brought in and seriously followed up in all international arenas like at last year’s OIC summit in Malaysia and in bilateral meetings and phone conversations,” asserted the Iranian diplomat.

He also enlisted a series of measures ‘for restoring the rights of the wronged Muslims of Myanmar’ taken by Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the past week; telephone conversations, FM Zarif’s letter to UN Secretary General Guterres, and issuance of statements.

He described the annual meeting of United Nations General Assembly as a good opportunity for following up the issue. “If further measures and meetings were needed, we would take up the necessary measures,” stated the Iranian diplomat.

“In the recent OIC summit held in Kazakhstan, a short meeting was held to support the wronged Muslims of Myanmar, and the heads of Islamic countries exchanged views upon the issue in that meeting,” recounted Mr. Ghasemi.

He reassured that the foreign ministry will keep on putting efforts on this issue at different levels..
