Resistance groups say UNSC resolution on Gaza fails to uphold Palestinians’ rights

TEHRAN (Iran News) Condemnations poured in on Tuesday after the UN Security Council approved the US-sponsored resolution enabling a so-called international peace and stabilization mission in Gaza. The text, which was revised several times, authorized the 20-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump that opened the way for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to take hold on October 10.

Hamas politburo member Mohammad Nazzal said despite the revisions made to the draft before the vote, the resolution failed to meet the demands of the Palestinian people.

He reaffirmed Hamas’s opposition to an attempt to “impose international guardianship” over Gaza under the UN umbrella. Nazzal noted that the movement is consulting with various countries to ensure that any implementation of the resolution avoids renewed conflict and does not impose negative consequences on civilians.

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine also issued an equally strong rejection. Spokesman Muhammad al-Hajj Mussa called the resolution an American coup against the negotiation process, stressing that the Palestinian resistance groups had fully adhered to the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and had been preparing for phase two.

He warned that any international force entering Gaza without public consent would be treated as an occupying force, adding that the current structure of the resolution could inflame tensions across the region.

Yemen condemns UN’s Gaza resolution

Yemen’s Foreign Ministry also denounced the resolution, arguing it disregards fundamental Palestinian rights, particularly their right to end the occupation, ensure self-determination, and establish an independent Palestinian state. Any plan that bypasses these rights, the ministry said, is destined to fail.

UN Security Council Resolution 2803 passed with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions—China and Russia. The measure authorizes a transitional Peace Council to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and an international stabilization force tasked with disarmament operations, including collecting weapons and dismantling military infrastructure in the territory.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Religious minority lawmakers in Majlis censured on Sunday an anti-Iran resolution by the United Nations General Assembly, calling the move a “politically-motivated” stance.

In their statement, the Religious minority lawmakers said the Canada-drafted UN resolution against Iran, although seemingly about human rights, is inherently a political statement and serves as a tool to exert more pressure on Iran.

On December 18, the UN General Assembly passed the resolution calling on Iran to stop committing human rights abuses. The measure proposed by Canada passed on a vote of 81-30, with 70 abstentions.

Part of the resolution called on Iran to release prisoners detained during the November protests.

The representatives strongly condemned the resolution for its instrumental use of fundamental human rights concepts and described it as a “one-sided” and “biased” approach with double standards aimed at isolating Iran in the international arena.

Also in a statement on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi denounced the resolution as “politically-motivated”.

Mousavi said the resolution was partial, confrontational, based upon selective approaches, and meant to severe political objectives.

Mousavi said an obvious reason proving illegitimacy of the resolution was that it had been endorsed by the front of Zionism and the reactionary regional regimes, who ignore all kinds of human rights norms, sponsor terrorism and extremism and violate the basic human rights.

“The political and instrumental use of human rights and the employment of double standards in this area are in contravention of the sustainable promotion of human rights,” the spokesman said.

“Despite this fact, the attitude of supporters of the resolution is the adoption of ‘double standards’ on the status of human rights in the countries and referral of the issue to the international circles, particularly to the United Nations. Accordingly, we deplore the fact that the UN mechanisms have been subject to such abuses,” he added.

Mousavi also said the destructive approach that supporters of the resolution have adopted against Iran contains multiple errors and flaws, such as the instrumental and political employment of human rights, ignoring the values, the creeds, and the distinguishing cultural features of various societies, ignoring the facts under the influence of an anti-Iran media propaganda, and the disregard for and silence on the widespread violation of the Iranian nation’s human rights as a result of the cruel and illegal sanctions.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is a democratic religious administration that has taken steps to promote and advance human rights at the national, regional and international levels within the framework of the religious and moral commitments and in conformity with its Constitution, normal regulations and the international treaties, and also feels practically obligated to observe them,” the spokesman added.

In a press release on Wednesday, Iran’s UN mission denounced attempts by US special representative for Iran, Brian Hook, at drumming up support against Iran.

The statement came after Hook went to the UN to update permanent members of the Security Council on US policy towards Iran.

The Iranian mission’s statement is as follows:

“A US State Department official traveled to New York to meet with the United Nations Security Council members to underscore, as falsely claimed by the US State Department, “the importance of holding Iran accountable for its defiance of UN Security Council resolutions on the development and testing of ballistic missiles”.

The US is reminded that resolution 2231, which has been adopted unanimously, replaced all previous resolutions of the Security Council on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, and endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Iran’s compliance with its nuclear related commitments under the JCPOA has been confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency for 14 times thus far.

Likewise, contrary to all fabrications and disinformation of the US, none of Iran’s missiles are “designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons”, and therefore resolution 2231 does not limit, in any way, the activities related to the conventional ballistic missiles of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Consequently, Iran’s related activities are not inconsistent with that resolution, rather, they fall outside of the purview or competence of that resolution.

However, the US, in clear and flagrant violation of resolution 2231, has withdrawn from the JCPOA. The worse is that, the US, as a permanent seat holder in the Security Council, is brazenly threatening other UN Member States, either to VIOLATE that resolution or to face PUNISHMENT. This is truly a destructive and hypocritical policy.

Instead of attempting to disseminate fabricated accusations and to exploit the UN Security Council to advance its mischievous policies against Iran, the US authorities must act responsibly in accordance with their international obligations and to explain to the Council members that why their country is violating resolution 2231 and why it is forcing other States to do the same.”

“I can make it clear as the foreign minister that the issue of missiles has never been subject to negotiations and that in Resolution 2231 nothing has been approved or ratified about its prohibition for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Zarif told Tasnim on Tuesday.

“Our defense doctrine is basically founded upon deterrence and is defensive, not offensive,” the top Iranian diplomat underlined, saying the Islamic Republic of Iran has proved its commitment to such a doctrine throughout its history.

His comments came after Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh confirmed reports that Iran has recently carried out a missile test, saying it was a major test.

On December 1, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned what he described as Iran’s testing of a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads as a violation of the UNSC Resolution 2231.

Resolution 2231 calls upon Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.”

Iranian officials have time and again underscored that none of the country’s missiles have been designed to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads, because nuclear weapons have basically no place in Iran’s defense doctrine.
