The 8h meeting of the Joint Strategic Consultation Committee of Iran and Oman was held in the presence of Iran deputy foreign minister for political affairs and Oman deputy foreign minister for diplomat affairs on Saturday.

During the meeting, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Bagheri Kani and Omani Deputy Foreign Minister for Diplomat Affairs Sheikh Khalifa al-Harthy pointed to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of relations between the two countries, expressing satisfaction with the level of relations between Iran and Oman.

Emphasizing the need to resolve regional issues by the countries of the region, Ali Bagheri Kani expressed hope that the existing problems will be resolved based on dialogue between the countries of the region.

Referring to the pivotal role of Iran in regional developments, Sheikh Khalifa al-Harthy said that his country, as in the past, is interested in developing bilateral and regional relations.

He added that Oman considers peaceful paths necessary for peace and tranquility in the region.

Iran-Oman relations, which have regional and trans-regional influences, will continue, he noted.

In addition to bilateral issues, the two sides discussed various regional and international issues, including the Vienna talks, the need for a political solution to the crisis in Yemen, and the region’s need for dialogue.

At the end of the meeting, the minutes of the 8h meeting of the Joint Strategic Consultation Committee of Iran and Oman was signed by the deputy foreign ministers of the two countries.

Heading a military delegation, Assistant Chief of Staff of the Sultanate of Oman’s Armed Forces for Operations and Planning Brigadier General Staff Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Mandhari met with Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri in Tehran.

The meeting was held as part of plans to expand the military and international cooperation between Tehran and Muscat.

Then days after this meeting, Iranian and Omani armed forces held a joint military drill and last week an economic meeting between the business activists of the two countries was held at Iran’s chamber of commerce.

Oman has been one of the close friends of Iran in the Persian Gulf.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran and Iraq have reached an initial deal to build a long highway that would ease traffic across the border and help boost trade between the two neighboring countries, an official said.

Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami said on Wednesday that the 354-kilometer highway would connect the city of Mehran on the western Iran border to the holy city of Najaf in central Iraq.

“The Mehran-Najaf Highway could be a high-potential road for transit and trade exchanges between the two countries in addition to the function it would have for transporting the pilgrims,” Eslami said.

The minister added that Iranian and Iraqi officials had concluded “initial talks” for building the key road, Press TV reported.

A study by the Iranian parliament shows that nearly two million Iraqis visit Iran each year for pilgrimage purposes. The number of Iranians visiting Iraq for a similar reason is around 700,000 although over two million Iranians arrive in Iraq during the Arba’een period, a special religious occasion which takes place in the second month of the Islamic calendar.

Iran and Iraq have massively expanded their trade relations over the past years mainly as a result of deepening political ties between the two neighbors.

Iraq is only second to China in Iran’s list of top export destinations with more than $12 billion worth of goods and services purchased from Iran each year.

Iran has embarked on a series of major transportation projects to facilitate trade with Iraq, including a railway that would connect cities on the southwestern border to the Iraqi port city of Basra.

In a meeting with officials in charge of ports affairs in Iran’s southern city of Bushehr, CEO of Mwani Ports Management Captain Abdulla Al-Khanji made the above remark and said, “a Qatari delegation on behalf of the country’s minister of transport and communications is visiting Iran with the aim of discussing challenges on the way of maritime trade between the two countries.”

The Qatari delegation is scheduled to visit Bushehr Port, Bandar Imam Khomeini and Bandar Shahid Rajaei in Hormozgan province, he maintained.

Consultations have been held in order to boost trade ties between the two friendly countries, so that Qatar can invest in Iran’s port in case of any need for developing infrastructures and facilitating transit.

Bandar Bushehr is one of the key ports in Iran through which the trade between Qatar and Iran is conducted, he said, adding that negotiations are underway on lifting the obstacles facing the private sector and increasing the volume of maritime trade between Iran and Qatar.

Eleven commercial ports are active in Iran’s southern province of Bushehr involving 11,100 vessels and 40,000 sailors.

TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi dismissed as unfounded a report claiming that Tehran has requested Tunis to mediate in the tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

“Iran has made no requests to Tunisia for mediation between Iran and Saudi Arabia and this report is rejected,” Qassemi told reporters on Wednesday when asked about a Kuwaiti daily’s report.

The daily, Al Jarida, claimed earlier on Wednesday that Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Director General for Middle East and North Africa Mohammad Irani had been sent to Tunisia by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to “request his Tunisian counterpart Khemaies Jhinaoui to intervene in the crisis between Tehran and Riyadh and discuss with the Saudis the possibility of behind-the-scenes talks between the two countries to resolve differences.”

“Jhinaoui conveyed the message to Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel Al Jubeir on the sidelines of the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo last Sunday,” the daily said, adding that the Tunisian authorities informed the Iranians that the message had been conveyed to Riyadh and that the Saudis would respond to it next week after studying it.

Tensions ran high between Tehran and Riyadh after Saudi Arabia’s execution of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr in January 2016, and a subsequent attack by outraged Iranian protesters on the Saudi embassy in Tehran, which resulted in the Arab country’s decision to sever its ties with the Islamic Republic.

The controversial move was preceded by a deadly crush of Hajj pilgrims in September 2015, which killed more than 460 Iranians.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed a “fresh start” to the relationship between the countries after a meeting in Vietnam that saw them agree to work more closely on North Korea. The leaders met on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in the Vietnamese resort city of Danang, Reuters reported. Ties between China and Japan, the world’s second- and third-largest economies, have been plagued by a long-running territorial dispute over a cluster of East China Sea islets. “At the end of the meeting, Xi said this is a meeting that marks a fresh start of relations between Japan and China. I totally feel the same way,” Abe told reporters. Abe said he has proposed a visit to China at an appropriate time, which would then be followed by a Xi visit to Japan.
