The Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran traveled to Abu Dhabi to participate in the Iran-UAE Political Consultations Committee.

During this trip, he met with Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the UAE.

In this meeting, they exchanged views and consulted on issues of mutual interest in bilateral, regional and international spheres.

Takht Ravanchi, who previously served as Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations and was a member of the Iranian nuclear negotiating team with the P5+1, also spoke about the second meeting of the Saudi-Chinese-Iranian trilateral committee, which was recently held as a follow-up to a Beijing-mediated agreement that restored diplomatic ties between Tehran and Riyadh in March 2023.

The Iranian official described the atmosphere of the trilateral meeting as cordial and transparent, saying that it provided the three countries with the opportunity to progress their “positive” ties.

He added that the three nations exchanged views on topics of mutual interest and stressed the importance of continuing this positive and forward-looking process.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, Majid Takht-Ravanchi complained that the U.S. economic terrorism against the Iranian nation has hampered the import of medicines to the country.

“The current U.S. administration’s claim of policy change towards the JCPOA is just in words. In practice, the U.S. policy of maximum pressure still continues, preventing Iran from using its own financial resources abroad to import medicines,” he said, referring to the nuclear deal by the acronym of its official name, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“Although the ongoing talks in Vienna are the first step in assessing the accuracy of the true political will of the US to return to the JCPOA, the main and real test will be after verification, when it is proven that America has changed course, abandoned its failed policy of maximum pressure, and stopped its economic terrorism against Iran.”

The Islamic Republic refused to bow down to the pressure and adopted instead a “maximum resistance” policy, which includes economic measures to weather the bans as well as reducing Tehran’s compliance with the JCPOA.

The new U.S. administration, under President Joe Biden, says it wants to undo Trump’s wrongs and rejoin the deal, but it is showing an overriding propensity for maintaining some of the sanctions as a tool of pressure.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Takht-Ravanchi said, “The UN Security Council (UNSC) adopted a deadly silence in the early days of 2020, when the United States martyred regional counter-terrorism heroes, including General Soleimani, in a terrorist act at the direct order of its president. A few days later, the US president threatened to hit 52 sites, including Iran’s important cultural sites.”

“Of course, in the same year, when the United States presented a draft resolution to impose an arms embargo on Iran, 13 UNSC members categorically rejected it. Subsequently, when that country tried to trigger the snapback mechanism against Iran, the same 13 UNSC members dismissed the US move. They said that the US had lost any right to use the snapback mechanism by its withdrawal from the JCPOA and that the US illegitimate claim had no legal, political or practical effect,” he added.

Shahrokh Nazemi, head of the media office of Iran’s permanent mission to the UN, said Iran’s Ambassador to the UN Majid Takht Ravanchi held a virtual meeting with Senator Murphy on Tuesday afternoon in which they discussed the ongoing nuclear talks in Vienna.

Takht Ravanchi underlined the need for practical removal of all U.S. sanctions on Iran which were imposed under various labels, calling the removal of sanctions “a key issue.”

During the meeting, Iran’s ambassador to the UN also clarified Tehran’s position for a peaceful end to the war in Yemen.

“In the talks, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s will for a peaceful settlement of the war in Yemen was noted, and it was stressed that any solution to the Yemeni crisis must ensure the complete lifting of the siege and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the country and a ceasefire,” Nazemi said, according to Fars News.

He added, “As to the Zionists’ crimes against the Palestinian people it was underlined that the recent clash began with the Zionist regime’s provocation and continued with the killing of the Palestinian people, but in recent days the U.S. government, by supporting Israel, has blocked adoption of a statement by the Security Council on a ceasefire.”

Nazemi pointed out that the position of the Islamic Republic on the comprehensive exchange of prisoners between Iran and the United States was also emphasized.

The remarks came after Murphy, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism, issued a statement on Tuesday saying that he met with Takht Ravanchi.

Murphy “on Tuesday met with Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations. The two discussed the Iran nuclear deal, the war in Yemen, and the release of American prisoners in Iran,” the statement said.

“I made the case directly to Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Majid Takht Ravanchi today for the Iranians to engage with seriousness and urgency in nuclear negotiations,” the senator said, adding that he also sought Iran’s help in cooling down the situation in Yemen and Palestine.

The senator’s statement also pointed to the recent visit by Murphy to the region.

“Earlier this month, Murphy’s traveled to Qatar, Oman and Jordan to meet with foreign leaders and senior officials including Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Omani Foreign Minister Al-Busaidi, Qatari Foreign Minister Al-Thani, United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths and several European ambassadors to Yemen to discuss the humanitarian crisis and urgent need to find a political solution to end the war in Yemen,” the statement said.

Earlier on Thursday, Takht-Ravanchi denounced sanctions as inhumane, immoral, and illegal, saying their far-reaching, devastating and long-term consequences are as brutal and vicious as terrorism, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

“In order to combat food insecurity in the world, it is necessary to lift siege and sanctions and foster international cooperation,” the Iranian diplomat said via videoconference to a meeting of the UN Security Council that discussed how conflict and food security are interlinked.

“The current number of people at risk of hunger and food insecurity in the world is alarming, which has made it essential and urgent to deal with this challenge,” he added.

He also referred to sanctions as the main reason behind food insecurity, noting that the US anti-Iran bans have prevented Tehran from gaining access to food, medicine as well as medical equipment, and undermined the Islamic Republic’s ability to effectively deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Last October, Iran’s High Council for Human Rights said despite the US claims that human affairs are not covered by sanctions, blocking financial transactions between Iran and the world has practically obstructed the importation of humanitarian articles and drugs used to treat people with serious diseases.

“As attested to by the American officials’ remarks, measures taken by the lawbreaking regime of America have clearly taken aim at the health and lives of [the Iranian] people and are considered ‘crime against humanity,” the council said in a statement at the time.

In an interview with IRNA on Wednesday, Majid Takht Ravanchi slammed the US’ claim about being still a participant of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal as an unprecedented historical joke.

With its unilateral exit from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) two years ago, the United States violated its commitments under the 2015 multilateral accord and a subsequent UNSC Resolution 2231 as well, the ambassador said.

The US is now planning to extend an arms embargo which was unfairly imposed on Iran and is due to be lifted in October under the terms of the UNSC Resolution 2231, he said.

The ambassador added that the US is reportedly seeking to do so by passing another resolution, which he said will be in violation of the UNSCR 2231.

The US itself is a violator of a UN resolution, Takht Ravanchi said, adding, “It is unprecedented in the history of the United Nations that a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which has passed a resolution, violates the resolution itself, and also encourages other countries to violate it.”

Top US officials announced Washington’s withdrawal from the JCPOA two years ago and now they are seeking to become a party to the deal which would be rejected by the international community, the ambassador stated.

The US is just seeking to re-impose sanctions on Tehran, he said.

The US’ acts contravene the international law and are rejected both politically and by the international community, Takht Ravanchi said, stressing that those attempts will go nowhere.
