The MoU was inked in an online ceremony attended by Kōichi Hagiuda, the Japanese minister of education, culture, sports, science, and technology, and Japanese ambassador to Iran Aikawa Kazutoshi.

“Sport has always been a perfect opportunity to cherish and promote global values such as respect, collaboration, and common objectives among nations,” said Soltanifar.

“As history would tell, sporting events lay the grounds for positive changes in the societies,” added the Iranian minister.

“The ties between Iran and Japan have been based upon friendship and mutual understanding for the past 90 years,” Soltanifar told his counterpart, as he wished the agreement would contribute to “further cooperation between sports federations of the two countries”.

Hailing the Japanese efforts for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Iranian official wished the organizers a successful experience in holding next summer’s Games.

Iranian super heavyweight weightlifter Saeid Alihosseini says that it could be a great honor for his nation if he would win the Laureus World Comeback of the Year.

Roger Federer was the big winner at the 2018 Laureus World Sports Awards on Tuesday night, picking up the Sportsman of the Year and Comeback of the Year awards at the ceremony in Monaco.

The Swiss tennis icon, who reclaimed the world No 1 ranking after overcoming a serious knee injury and winning his 20th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open last month, fought off competition from Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Nadal to land the Sportsman of the Year award.

Now, the Iranian weightlifter says he deserved to win the prestigious award.

Alihosseini returned to action in December in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships after eight years due to doping suspension and won a silver medal.

Reigning Olympic champion Lasha Talakhadze claimed the gold medal and the bronze medal went to Behdad salami.

“To win the Laureus award is a great honor and I liked to win the honor as an Iranian. I won a medal after eight years absence and I think it I did a good job,” Alihosseini said.

“From now on, I will not be an easy opponent for Talakhadze. I won a silver medal in Anaheim with just three months training,” he went on to say.
