Overhaul of 16 Offshore Platforms in South Pars Completed

TEHRAN (Iran News) Speaking to IRNA, Sepahdar Abbaszadeh provided detailed updates on the company’s ambitious program to overhaul 35 offshore oil and gas platforms in South Pars during the current operational year.

Abbaszadeh explained that the annual overhaul of South Pars platforms is strategically scheduled in the first half of the year to ensure the company – which supplies more than 70% of the country’s gas consumption and over 40% of its gasoline – is fully prepared for the colder months. “Overhauls generally start in April or early May and continue through the end of October,” he said. “This year, we planned to complete 35 overhauls. So far, 16 have been finalized, one is in progress, and the rest will be completed on schedule.”

According to Abbaszadeh, the duration of each overhaul varies depending on the scope of work required for each platform. Up to this stage, 6,150 work orders have been registered and executed, consuming a total of 54,759 man-hours.

Key tasks in the overhaul program include replacing 32-inch pipeline bends, repairing and replacing heavy 15-ton valves, inspecting and repairing high-pressure vessels, testing and calibrating platform control systems, inspecting and servicing flare ignition and lighting systems, and calibrating safety valves that regulate pressure.

Despite the extensive nature of the work, gas production has been maintained at maximum levels. At any given time, only two to four platforms are taken offline for maintenance, while the remainder continue operating at full capacity to meet the domestic and industrial gas demand.

“These activities are carried out in extremely challenging conditions in the intense summer heat of the Persian Gulf,” Abbaszadeh noted. “Our specialists and personnel work tirelessly to ensure the nation can benefit from the full capacity of this shared gas field during winter.”

Addressing the impact of international sanctions on the procurement of parts and equipment, Abbaszadeh acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the industry’s resilience. “While the effects of sanctions are undeniable, we have been able to domestically produce more than 90% of the parts required for our operations, thanks to localization efforts and the capabilities of Iranian knowledge-based companies,” he said.

All components that could no longer be imported due to sanctions have been manufactured domestically using top-grade materials and in accordance with international standards. “The quality and efficiency of our platforms have not been compromised,” he stressed. Many sophisticated parts that were once imported are now produced or repaired locally, making domestic products a viable replacement for foreign ones.

Abbaszadeh highlighted that while Iran still has progress to make to reach the top global benchmarks, continuous advancement and perseverance in the face of challenges remain the oil industry’s greatest strengths. “We are steadily localizing even the most sensitive gas industry components, including those used inside wells, with the help of Iran’s young specialists,” he added.

He also pointed to the team’s ability to maintain operations during recent security tensions and a 12-day conflict in the region. “Even under those conditions, not a single day of production or overhaul work was halted,” he said. Transportation of personnel and equipment was severely hindered due to the suspension of helicopter flights, forcing teams to rely on marine vessels. In some cases, staff traveled up to 48 hours overland to reach the offshore facilities along the Iran-Qatar maritime border – yet operations continued without disruption.

Abbaszadeh praised the relentless efforts of the Pars Oil and Gas Company workforce, noting that nearly 100% of Iranian households now enjoy access to natural gas. “With ongoing improvements, we hope to further enhance the country’s gas supply in the coming years,” he concluded.

TEHRAN (Iran News) “We are diligently advancing preliminary studies for the South Pars pressure boosting project, and I expect to announce promising updates regarding the finalization of certain contracts before the year’s end,” Minister Mohsen Paknejad stated on Saturday.

The South Pars gas reservoir, a critical energy source for Iran, is experiencing pressure declines, raising alarms across the energy sector. Experts have repeatedly warned about the potential consequences, with the Parliament’s Research Center highlighting the deteriorating gas balance in the country.

In a recent report, the center projected that by 2041, daily gas production in Iran might reach 898.7 million cubic meters, significantly falling short of the anticipated demand of 1,410.8 million cubic meters. This shortfall of 512 million cubic meters per day could lead to severe challenges in meeting energy needs, especially during the winter months.

“The declining pressure in South Pars is a pressing concern for both the oil industry and the country at large,” the oil minister said, calling for immediate action to be taken to address this issue.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has officially inaugurated Phase 11 of the South Pars gas field, which is the last phase of the giant field’s development project in the Persian Gulf, Iranian Oil Ministry’s news portal Shana reported.

During a Monday visit to Asaluyeh port in the southwestern Bushehr Province, Raisi opened the project and met with local people as well as oil industry managers and experts.

South Pars Phase 11 will initially produce 15 million cubic meters of gas per day before raising recovery to 56 million cubic meters of gas, 50,000 barrels of gas condensate, and 750 metric tons of sulfur per day.

The gas from South Pars Phase 11 will be transferred to the onshore refinery of Phase 12, where it will be processed and injected into the national gas network.

According to Head of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) Mohsen Khojasteh Mehr, South Pars Phase 11 will have 24 wells and generate an annual income of $5 billion once its development is completed.

“The development of South Pars Phase 11 is one of the NIOC’s most strategic and important plans and projects, which finally came online in the current government after a 20-year delay,” he said.

Iran had previously awarded the development of the phase 11 project to a consortium comprised of France’s Total, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), and Petropars which is a subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), however, Total and CNPCI pulled out of the project in 2019 due to the U.S. sanctions.

The mentioned phase was finally developed by Petropars after its partners left the contract. The drilling operation for the first well of the mentioned phase was officially started in December 2020.

South Pars field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf, is the world’s largest gas field, covering an area of 3,700 square kilometers of Iran’s territorial waters.

The giant field is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate. The field is divided into 24 standard phases.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –The platform of Iran’s South Pars (SP) Phase 11 was installed in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday.

The installation operation of SP Phase 11 platform planned by National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) started on Tuesday and was successfully completed on Wednesday in collaboration with Petropars Company and Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company (IOEC) by using the Oceanic-5000 Crane Barge.

The 3,200-ton platform, the heaviest in the South Pars gas field, was moved and installed in an unprecedented operation by Iranian experts, and gas production from the strategic phase will start soon after 20 years.

The target gas output from South Pars Phase 11 is 56 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d).

Addressing the ceremony Oil Minister Javad Owji said that Phase 11 of Iran’s South Pars (SP) gas field will yield four to five billion dollars annually.

Pointing to a 22-year delay in development of this phase, the minister added its output will help reduce the gap between production and consumption of gas in the country.

The installation operation of SP Phase 11 platform was carried out by National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC), Petropars Company, and Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company (IOEC), he mentioned.

Based on the contract, French company Total was to get some $4.9 billion to develop Phase 11, recalled Owji, adding the company withdrew and missed the opportunity, as the project was implemented amid sanctions by Iranian experts.

President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi will inaugurate the SP Phase development project soon, said Owji, adding gas production from Phase 11 will be up to 15 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) in the first stage and will gradually reach 50 mcm/d.

Phase 11 was the only undeveloped part of South Pars joint field and the other side [Qatar] kept extracting gas during the delay in implementing the development project in Iran, he regretted.

Owji said his ministry has carried out prioritized projects, including inauguration of Abadan Refinery Phase 2, inauguration of Phase 14 refinery, inauguration of the first phase of NGL 3200 plant in Hoveyzeh, and installation of Phase 11 platform.

He added that Iran has become self-sufficient in constructing refinery and petrochemical plant, and also developing oil and gas fields.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the official ceremony of transfer and installation of the platform of South Pars (SP) Phase 11, the minister hailed the “creative” task of transporting and installing the platform and added it was manufactured three years earlier than the due time.

French company Total and CNPC International, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), signed a $4.9 billion contract to develop South Pars Phase 11, but they withdrew under tough conditions caused by sanctions, he said.

“The SP Phase 11 development project was completed by the 13th (incumbent) administration through exploiting full capacity and its platform was installed,” continued Owji, announcing that it will become operational with an initial gas output of 12 to 15 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) within few weeks.

Four wells of the phase have been activated and two more will come on stream within few months, mentioned the minister, saying gas produced there will increase the country’s revenue and help redress imbalance between gas production and consumption in winter.

Meanwhile the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) managing director said transportation of the South Pars Phase 11 is “unparalleled” in the history of the country’s oil industry in terms of execution and complexity.

Addressing the official ceremony of transfer and installation of the Phase 11 platform, Mohsen Khojastehmehr added his company officially engaged in the development project of the phase, continuing, “In addition, we put manufacture of platform jacket and second platform on the agenda to complete the development, and the Iranian companies, which signed the related contract, are currently building it.”

The project will help redress imbalance between domestic gas production and consumption, and will also increase the country’s annual revenue by $5 billion.

The NIOC CEO said development of South and North Azadegan oil fields in southwestern Iran is underway.

Last year, 40 new oil wells came on stream, increasing the daily output by 45,000 barrels, explained Khojastehmehr, adding 40 more wells will become functional this year, which will add 60,000 barrels to Azadegan’s oil production.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth $7 billion was signed in the presence of President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi in the previous year, and a seven-billion-dollar contract on integrated development of the second phase of Azadegan field will be inked this year, he said.

Khojastehmehr talked of maximum production in Hengam joint oil field in the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf, stating that Iran-Oman talks on joint production and development are underway.

Iran and Oman signed an agreement on their joint study on shared Hengam oil field last month.

The agreement is aimed at preparing a Master Development Plan (MDP) for the field, and different plans for further development and bilateral cooperation on exploitation of the field.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –The CEO of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) said the daily gas production from the South Pars joint gas field has reached 700 million cubic meters.

According to Pars Oil and Gas Company, Mohammad Hossein Motejali said the company raised its gas production from the massive gas field due to the cold snap in the country and the increase in gas consumption in the country.

He listed the priorities of Pars Oil and Gas Company in two sectors, development and operation, and referring to the important role of this company in managing the country’s gas production and consumption balance in the cold months of the year, said: “Implementation of the production maintenance plan from the South Pars gas field is one of the most important priorities of this company.”

The CEO of Pars Oil and Gas Company stated that in addition to the gas pressure boosting projects from this field, the development of other fields such as North Pars, Bilal, Farzad and Phase 11 of South Pars are on the agenda as well.

Meanwhile Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) is planning to invest $2 million in a project for laboratory modeling of corrosion together with a knowledge-based company.

Abbasali Porteghali, POGC’s head of research and technology and thinking center, said: “For the development of infrastructure and laboratory modeling of the corrosion of this field, a project has been defined with more than $2 million investment with a knowledge-based company.”

Addressing a specialized panel entitled “Introduction of technological needs and challenges” at the first conference and exhibition of management of knowledge-based products in Iran’s oil industry, Mr. Porteghali said aligning the plans and executive policies of POGC with the capabilities of domestic knowledge-based companies, purchasing domestically produced items and supporting the localization of goods and engineering services, and updating the domestic procedures and regulations of the company are among the most important actions of POGC for supporting the economy of domestic knowledge-based companies.

He considered the most critical need of Pars Oil and Gas Company in the field of knowledge and technology to maintain the health of the company’s sea pipelines, and said: “There are currently more than 3,000 kilometers of 32-inch pipelines and 3,000 kilometers of 4-inch pipelines under the management of this company. Every year, more than 100 kilometers of these pipelines need major repairs, currently, the repair and replacement of each kilometer of marine pipelines cost a lot for the company.”

Pointing to the 30-month implementation period of this project, Porteghali continued: “With the cooperation and assistance of the National Iranian Oil Company, this project will begin by 2024.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) has put a new single point mooring (SPM) into operation at phase 19 of South Pars gas field to increase the condensate loading capacity of the giant field, an official with the company announced.

According to the Operator of South Pars phase 19 development project Seyed Hossein Azimi, a one-million-barrel cargo has been loaded from this SPM for the first time, the POGC portal reported on Sunday.

“With the fourth single point mooring of South Pars going operational, in addition to increasing the condensate loading capacity in the export terminal of South Pars Site 2, the field’s operational flexibility will increase and will lead to stable production of gas and gas condensate in South Pars Site 2 during the coming winter,” he said.

POGC, which is in charge of developing the South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf, had installed this SPM system at Site 2 of the field in January to facilitate gas condensate exports from the region.

The SPM, which is the second one at Site 2 of South Pars, has a loading capacity of 7,000 cubic meters per hour of gas condensate.

Prior to the inauguration of this SPM, the gas condensate produced at Pars 2 region was sent through a subsea pipeline to the SPM No. 1 of the South Pars Phase 12 to be loaded for exports, now this second SPM is also connected to the site by a 36-inch subsea pipeline with a length of 6.8 kilometers.

According to Azimi, the new SPM will increase the operational flexibility for gas condensate exports by making POGC able to carry out periodic facility repairs on both SPM systems, and will also prevent the deterioration of condensate measuring and loading equipment by balancing the operational loads between the two systems.

In late December 2020, Iran inaugurated its strategic gas condensate storage facilities in the South Pars region in a move to boost the storage and exports of the mentioned commodity.

With a nominal capacity of 640,000 cubic meters (four million barrels), the mentioned storage facilities and gas condensate measuring stations have been constructed to store gas condensate produced by South Pars refineries.

The mentioned storages are able to supply 480,000 barrels of gas condensate to the Persian Gulf Star Refinery on a daily basis and also are able to send gas condensate to the mentioned SPM systems via pipelines.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The first train of the Phase 14 Refinery of Iran’s South Pars complex is going to go operational this winter (starts on December 22), Oil Minister Javad Oji announced.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of a visit to the South Pars complex in Assalouyeh on Friday, Oji mentioned the South Pars Phase 14 Refinery as the last refinery of the complex to go operational and said: “our colleagues have promised that the first train of the refinery will be put into operation this winter and will add gas to the country’s network.”

As Shana reported, the minister underlined the significant role of the South Pars complex in supplying the country’s natural gas needs and noted that 70 percent of the country’s gas needs are met by South Pars.

Oji expressed hope that with the decisions taken this year, the maximum production and extraction of gas from the South Pars joint field will be achieved.

South Pars Phase 14 development project is aimed at producing 56.6 million cubic meters per day of rich gas, 75,000 barrels per day of gas condensate, 400 tons per day of sulfur, one million tons per year of liquefied petroleum gas and one million tons per year of ethane to be fed to petrochemical plants.

Back in October 2020, the operator of the South Pars Phase 14 development project had said the project’s onshore refinery was scheduled to be fully operational by the first half of the current Iranian calendar year (September 2021), however, the coronavirus pandemic caused some delay in the project.

The huge South Pars field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf, covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran’s territorial waters. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, called North Dome, are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.

The field is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Managing Director of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC), which is in charge of developing the country’s giant South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf, has said proper planning must be made in order to maintain the field’s production level in the future.

“So far $80 billion has been invested for the development of the field and from now on we should try and make planning to maintain the production levels,” Mohammad Meshkinfam said on Thursday in a meeting with the new Oil Minister Javad Oji.

He noted that out of a total of 400 wells in the offshore section, 336 wells are active and operational adding: “With the implementation of Corrosion Resistant Alloy (CRA) pipes, other remaining gas wells, whose drilling operations have been completed in the offshore section, will go operational.”

Referring to the operation of all offshore platforms in the South Pars phases, the official said: “Currently, 37 platforms are operational [in this field] and only two platforms of phase 11 have remained. With these two platforms going operational, we will have a total of 39 active platforms in South Pars gas field.”

Pointing to the field’s average daily production, Meshkinfam put the field’s output on Thursday at 617 million cubic meters (mcm) and noted that POGC will ensure an average daily output of 700 mcm in the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 21).

He further mentioned the phase 11 development project, saying: “Over the past 20 years, nearly $80 billion has been invested in South Pars, as a result of which the offshore section of this field has been completed except for the Phase 11 which will be completed over the next two years.”

The POGC head further pointed out that currently 700,000 barrels of gas condensate are also produced on a daily basis from South Pars gas field, saying: “Of course, this figure will change in proportion to the amount of gas production, but eventually, after completing the remaining sections, the production capacity of gas condensate in South Pars will reach a maximum of one million barrels per day.”

South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf, covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran’s territorial waters and the remaining 6,000 square kilometers, called North Dome, are situated in the Arab country’s territorial waters.

Earlier this week, POGC had announced the preparation for new drilling operations in this field.

Ali Akbar Majed, head of POGC’s Oil and Gas Engineering Department said planning is underway for drilling a new descriptive well at the northern part of the mentioned field, the POGC portal reported on Tuesday.

According to Majed, identifying and exploring undeveloped parts of the South Pars gas field is among POGC’s top programs for maintaining production from this joint field.

“Due to the natural decrease in the pressure of the South Pars field gas reservoir following its production over the last 20 years, the production rate of this reservoir will inevitably decline even more in the coming years, so the company has put exploring the undeveloped parts of the field on the agenda by drilling new wells,” the official said.

He further noted that last year another descriptive well was drilled in the eastern part of the South Pars gas field and the results of the drilling operations will become available to the Oil Ministry in the near future.
