Police Chief of Golestan Province Brigadier General Rouholamin Qassemi announced on Wednesday that anti-narcotics police have seized 510 kilograms of hashish on the main roads of the Iranian province of Golestan, saying that following comprehensive intelligence activities, the police forces traced the haul of illegal consignment in Golestan province, which was coming from one of the Eastern provinces of Iran.

Two smugglers have been arrested during the operation and two vehicles were confiscated by the police, he added.

Last month, Police Chief of Sistan and Baluchistan province Brigadier General Mohammad Qanbari said that a big consignment was captured after a series of intelligence operations and during a battle between the antinarcotics force and a gang attempting to smuggle the drugs into the country through Saravan border regions.

Four criminals and two vehicles along with a number of different weapons were captured during the operation, the police chief added.

A week before that, Secretary-General of Iran’s Drug Control Headquarters Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni said in a press conference in Zahedan that his country’s police forces have confiscated a total of 550 tons of different types of illicit drugs in the past seven months up to October 22, in a bid to further tighten the national campaign against narcotics, adding that it shows a 15% rise in comparison with figures from the last year.

“The accused was traced and lastly arrested in Nahavand after police received reports from cultural heritage aficionados about him [illegally] keeping ancient relics, some of which date back to the first millennium BC,” a senior police official in charge of protecting cultural heritage and the one who seized the stash said on Saturday, Mehr reported.

Recovered objects include 13 silver and copper coins, bronze figurines, seven rings made from silver or copper, agate beads, a copper bowl, three daggers, and a semi-circular metal object, which experts of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, [Tourism and Handicrafts] declared date from the 1st Millennium BC to Parthian and Islamic periods, Amir Rahmatollahi added.

The culprit was surrendered to the judicial system for further investigation, the report said.

Earlier this year, Iranian authorities have recently confiscated four historical coins from two smugglers in Bojnourd, the capital of North Khorasan province.

Two of the objects, made of copper, have been estimated to date from the Parthian era (247 BC–224 CE) and the two other dates back to the time of Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), CHTN quoted Hossein Asghar Qanbarzadeh, a senior police official in charge of protecting cultural heritage.

An unknown object was also recovered from the suspects, who were detained in this regard and surrendered to the judicial system for further investigation, he added.

The two were arrested while making a deal in an antique market in Bojnourd.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of Seasonal Conference of Secretaries of Iran Drug Control Headquarters in Tehran on Saturday.

The Iranian administration has made efforts against decreasing the budget of the Drug Control Headquarters, Vaezi said, adding that fortunately the drug trafficking has been identified as an essential issue in Iran.

Iran has done very well in the fight against drug smugglers, he mentioned.

Vaezi stressed that Iran cannot solely coordinate with the countries of the region in order to fight against drug-trafficking and needs international assistance.

Located near Afghanistan which is one of the main sources of opium production in the world, Iran is on the frontline of the fight against drug trafficking. Iran has lost many forces during this fight. The country has always asked for international help in such operations, noting that the other countries, especially European states, should take responsibility and play a positive role in this fight or face its threats themselves.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past four decades. The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries. The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades.

According to reports, in 2018 alone, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

According to the latest World Drug Report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in 2017, Iran had seized the largest quantity of opiates, accounting for 39% of the global total.
