TEHRAN (Iran News) – Former Iranian international goalkeeper Seyyed Mehdi Rahmati announced his retirement form professional football on Wednesday.

An ex-keeper of Persian Gulf Pro League giants Sepahan and Esteghlal, Rahmati was appointed as the player-manager of Shahr Khodro by the end of last Iranian league season in late August.

He steered the Mashhad-based club in the AFC Champions League in Qatar, where his team finished bottom of Group B.

Rahamti, 37, who has 76 international caps under his belt, was first introduced to Iranian football with Fajr Sepasi in 2000.

A glittering career saw Rahmati win two successive league titles with Sepahan (2010 and 2011), before lifting the title again in his second spell in Esteghlal’s outfit in 2013.

His international career, however, came to a relatively early end in November 2012 – during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers – after a feud with then Iran head coach Carlos Queiroz.
