TEHRAN (Iran News) – Syria has condemned a Western-backed resolution passed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) over the country’s alleged use of toxic arms, saying the illegitimate move encourages foreign-sponsored terrorists to go ahead with their crimes in the Arab country.

On Wednesday, the 25th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) suspended the voting rights and privileges of the Syrian Arab Republic, accusing Damascus of failing to comply with the treaty, which prohibits all use of chemicals on the battlefield.

The resolution was passed by 87 votes in favor to 15 against, including Syria, Iran, Russia and China. There were also 34 abstentions out of 136 countries taking part.

France had introduced the anti-Syria motion on behalf of 46 countries also including Britain and the United States.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that only 45 percent of CWC’s 193 member states not the majority voted in favor of “the illegitimate decision,” which is inconsistent with the OPCW’s usual procedures.

“The Syrian Arab Republic condemns, in the strongest terms, the hostile approach embodied today in the work of the 25th session of the Conference of the States Parties in the Chemical Weapons convention, as Western countries, especially the US, Britain and France practiced the most heinous methods of blackmail, threats and pressure to pass a Western decision against Syria in a dangerous precedent in the history of the organization,” it added.

The ministry also complained that the countries behind the resolution have “deliberately ignored the great efforts exerted by Syria during eight years, since its voluntary access to CWC, and the unprecedented cooperation it has showed with the Organization teams.”

“The decision is a message that comes in the context of the western direct support for the terrorist groups in Syria, and it is an encouragement to terrorists to go ahead in their crimes, including the chemical crimes, perpetrated by these groups in all incidents witnessed in Syria against civilians,” it said.

Separately, Syria’s OPCW Representative Rania Al-Rifai stressed that the resolution is a manifestation of support for terrorists by the states that proposed the measure.

“The decision was made based on false reports that contain fabricated and misconceived conclusions,” she said. “There is no doubt that this decision will encourage terrorists in their actions so that they continue to commit their crimes against innocent civilians particularly with the use of chemicals.”

Syria surrendered its entire chemical stockpile in 2013 to a mission led by the United Nations and the OPCW.

It believes that false-flag chemical attacks on the country’s soil have been staged by foreign-backed terrorists in a bid to pressure the government amid army advances.

Speaking to Tasnim on Saturday, vice chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Abbas Moqtadaee said the motion, prepared as an urgent proposal, would oblige the government to cease the voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol.

Many lawmakers have signed the motion in response to the US and Europe’s excessive demands, he added.

Moqtadaee said the proposal will soon be submitted to the Parliament’s presiding board.

In September 2019, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the country was ready to pursue ratification of the Additional Protocol in the Parliament provided that the US Congress endorses the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and lifts all anti-Tehran sanctions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to refrain from a dangerous precedent and not rely on baseless claims after the UN nuclear agency’s Board of Governors adopted a resolution on Iran.

In an article published on Saturday, Behrouz Kamalvandi criticized the IAEA Board of Governors for referring to inauthentic information to adopt a resolution on Iran.

“The IAEA should not refer and give credence to the information obtained by espionage activities or to the claims raised by baseless sources,” he noted.

Kamalvandi emphasized that the IAEA’s call for clarification or additional access to locations in Iran on the basis of fake and fabricated documents runs counter to the Statute of the IAEA and the verification system, stressing that Iran is by no means committed to agree to such requests.

“Such illegitimate references should not and could not be a legal justification and basis for a request for access to the nuclear sites or other places or a means to put pressure on and accuse the countries,” Kamalvandi added.

“The IAEA and its Members must counter and prevent such unprincipled and dangerous precedent that damages the national sovereignty of countries,” the Iranian spokesman underscored.

On Friday, the IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution calling on Iran to fully cooperate with the IAEA in implementing its NPT Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol and satisfy the IAEA’s requests without further delay.

The resolution, submitted by France, Germany and the UK, was adopted by a vote of 25 to 2 with 7 abstentions.

Despite obstruction by the U.S. and its allies, the United Nations on Saturday approved a non-binding resolution proposed by Iran for nuclear disarmament.

It was ratified with 112 countries in favor, 44 against, and 15 abstentions.

The resolution calls on all countries armed with nuclear weapons to destroy their arsenal in accordance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). They also have to stop manufacturing new nuclear weapons and exporting them to other countries, or deploying them on foreign soil.

The United States, Israel, Britain, Russia and France were among those countries who voted against the resolution.

According to the Press TV, Tehran devised the resolution based on the ratification of the Review Conferences of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty held in 1995, 2000, and 2010.

In 1970, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, or NPT, was ratified, and it was extended indefinitely in 1995. Under the treaty, the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — China, France, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom — were acknowledged as nuclear powers, and other countries that joined the treaty agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons development, although they are allowed to use nuclear technology for non-military purposes.

Israel, India and Pakistan never signed the treaty while North Korea signed the treaty but withdrew in 2003 and has tested nuclear devices since then. China, India, and Pakistan are all pursuing new ballistic missile, cruise missile, and sea-based nuclear delivery systems.
