TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said on Friday water drilling operations from a depth of 3,000 meters is underway in the southeastern water-stressed province of Sistan and Balouchestan.

The government decided to seriously invest in ultra-deep well drilling projects after carrying out zoning studies and geophysical studies for digging wells in potential areas back in 2010, Ardakanian said according to Tasnim.

He added that the government began working on one project in the town of Zabol to see if the studies would show any positive results.

“We managed to extract samples from a depth of 2,191 meters. The water had a high content of salt and its Electrical Conductivity (EC) was 25,000 MicroSiemens per centimeter. It was not drinkable and also not suitable for farming purposes” the minister said.

Later, we decided to continue drilling to the target depth of 3,000 meters and extracted more samples, Ardakanian said.

Noting that Tehran plans to send its first sample of water from ultradeep resources to relevant international authorities with the help of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, the minister said, “We need to determine the age of the water to see if it is either fossil water or has dynamic properties”.

Perpetual drought has been accompanied by a significant decline in rainfall that has resulted in a 6-billion-cubic-meter drop in the average water level of reservoirs.

Iran uses 90% of its renewable water resources, while the global average is 40%.

Officials say the amount of water drawn from groundwater sources needs to drop from 55 billion cubic meters to 26.5 billion cubic meters per year to avoid a crisis.

In a statement released on Monday night, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi instructed the commanders of ground, air, naval and air defense units of Iran to use all army equipment stationed in the region to help the people stuck in flood and give relief in coordination with the local crisis management department.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Unprecedented flash floods in Iran’s south and southeast provinces have hit 350 villages in recent days, damaging thousands of residential buildings, according to IRNA.

Heavy rainfalls in the country’s south, which started on Thursday, have caused flash floods in Sistan and Baluchestan Province and caused damage to more than 20,000 residential buildings, Abbas-Ali Arjmandi, director-general of the provincial Crisis Management Center said on Sunday.

The flash floods have also blocked rural roads leading to more than 500 villages and closed schools, Arjmandi said, adding that six villages have been evacuated so far.

He said heavy rains in southern areas of the province triggered the sudden flooding, which have also caused blackouts in several villages in the southeastern province.

Floods in Kerman Province have also blocked roads between 363 villages in the province, Majid Saeidi, head of the provincial crisis management center said on Sunday. He added that nearly 100 villages have lost electricity following the flooding.

In the southern province of Hormozgan, four villages were evacuated in the city of Jask on Saturday to prevent possible casualties.

On March 19, heavy downpours began sweeping the country, with raging currents battering houses, washing away cars and killing people in a few provinces.

The rainfalls eventually caused rivers to burst their banks triggering the worst flooding in decades in 25 of the country’s 31 provinces.

According to estimates, the flooding caused an estimated $2.9 billion in damage to roads, bridges, homes and farmland. It affected 4,400 villages, damaged 14,000 kilometers of roads and destroyed more than 700 bridges.

Estimates by government agencies suggest that the floods have taken the lives of nearly 80 people and destroyed over 25,000 houses around the country.

Shirzad, who is also the chief executive officer of the CORC, said for boosting agro-entrepreneurship and optimizing natural resource exploitation, the organization has developed 16 Rural Production Cooperatives (RPCs) in Sistan plain.

Elaborating the project of “Irrigation of 46000 Hectares of Sistan Plain”, he reminded that the development of new farming systems has five steps including, feasibility study, development of cooperative societies, development of 285 advisory committees for participatory and integrated management of water and development of 12 founding board in the Zahak and Hamoon.

“Over 50% of the population of Sistan and Balouchestan province reside in rural areas. Therefore the development of integrated farming plans, modern greenhouses, and establishment of agro-processing and packaging industries are among the agenda of this project for sustaining rural communities along with the enhancing regional agro-economy,” the official noted.

“Rural and agricultural cooperatives are the last ring of the state administrative chain that provides service to small scale farmers in remote villages. Presently, about 40% of fertilizers and 30% of pesticides are distributed among farmers by cooperatives nationwide. Providing microcredit and marketing assistance to the members are among the cooperative responsibilities toward the Iranian agricultural community that CORC is reinforcing them through adopting appropriate policies, supporting and supervising the rural and agricultural cooperatives,” he has said earlier.

Iran’s interior minister said the administration is going to launch a grand scheme for development of the province of Sistan and Balouchestan, located in southeast of Iran.

In comments on Thursday, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said a delegation from his ministry came up with a detailed plan for development of Sistan and Balouchestan after a 6-day visit to different parts of the underprivileged province and prioritizing the needs.

He said the practical initiatives, coming into 486 categories, were submitted to President Hassan Rouhani, whose office is going to communicate the grand plan to 24 ministries and administrative organizations to carry out the practical measures in the province.

In December 2016, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei issued an order to withdraw a sum of $500 million from the National Development Fund of Iran for development projects in Sistan and Balouchestan.

Located in southeast of Iran, the large province borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, and has a long coastline by the Sea of Oman.

The desert province grapples with severe water shortage, particle pollution, underdeveloped infrastructure and transit of illicit drugs.

In February 2017, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force said the force has mobilized all available resources for development of Sistan and Balouchestan, pointing to projects on construction of free settlements for impoverished families, supplying water to outlying regions, and creation of jobs in various fields such as agriculture and road construction.
