TEHRAN (Iran News) – The spokesman of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) has said the country’s non-oil exports to Poland recorded 114 percent growth in the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20).

According to Rouhollah Latifi, more than 22,664 tons of non-oil goods, valued at $53.198 million, were exchanged between Iran and Poland last year, showing a 79 and 28 percent growth in terms of weight and value respectively as compared to the preceding year.

As IRNA reported, the official made the remarks on Sunday when Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau arrived in Tehran to meet with Iranian officials.

Iran exported more than 18,134 tons of products, valued at $24,059,957 to Poland in the mentioned year, registering a 145 and 114 percent hike in terms of weight and value respectively, he said.

The IRICA spokesman further pointed to the imports from the European country, saying that some 4,530 tons of goods valued at $29,138,027 were also imported from Poland last year, recording 14 percent decline and four percent increase in terms of weight and value, respectively.

Chemicals, raisins, fruit juices, nuts, melamine, dates, fabrics, auto parts, mirrors and glass, food supplements, herbal extracts, fresh fruits and vegetables, flooring, iron bars, barberry, wire, etc. were among the main products exported from Iran to Poland in this period, Latifi added.

Tractors, mining machinery, beet seeds, engine rims, antioxidants, electronic boards, food additives, metal wire, drilling machinery, paper, combines, medical and laboratory equipment, packaging machinery, and auto parts were also the major items that the Islamic Republic imported from Poland, according to Latifi.

Poland, being located in the center of Europe, is a suitable point for Iranian traders to enter European markets.

More than five hundred years of historical relations between the two countries and good memories of Poles from Iran considering the country’s support for Poland’s independence, as well as sheltering of more than 120,000 Poles during World War II in Iran, have provided a good cultural and political context for the development of relations with this country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Chairman of the Iran-Poland Joint Trade Committee Rahim Banamolaei says the two countries’ joint chamber of commerce is to be officially launched soon as the talks are underway.

Banamolaei said that the current trade level between Iran and Pakistan is like the past years and it is not satisfactory and it is around $50m per year.

Speaking to ILNA and touching upon the latest development in Iran-Poland trade, he said an Iranian delegation is currently in Warsaw and it is negotiating on tourism and they will return to Tehran in upcoming days. He added that the delegation pursues developing tourism ties between Iran and Poland as well as airline services. He noted in return, a Polish delegation is to come to Iran and to visit two provinces of the country.

He went on to say that the banking problem for trade of Iran and Poland has not been solved yet and traders are still trading through the third party country, adding that one of the Iranian traders has faced problem in Poland and Poland’s commercial attache in Tehran has been invited to the chamber to resolve it

On the importance of forming the joint commission, he said the joint economic commission of the two countries should be formed but it is still unknown which minister is to head this commission. Banamolaei said naturally the economic minister should head the commission but it has not been decided yet.

He said the establishing the Joint Iran-Poland Chamber of Commerce is in the pipeline and all formalities have been done and Iran Chamber of Commerce is to help it financially in order to find a suitable place for the chamber. He noted that the website of the chamber is almost ready and it will be inaugurated when the Polish delegation visits Tehran.

On the trade volume of Iran and Poland, he said it is like the past years and it is around $50m per year which is not a considerable figure and it depends on the government policies to ease imports and exports.

Banamolaei announced readiness of Iranian traders for increasing the exports and for example they are ready to export machine-made carpets to Poland, adding that the country is exporting hand-woven carpets to Poland.

He criticized current national economy and said almost 85 percent of the economy is in control of the state and semi-state sectors and the private sector is in control of 18 percent. He added that the share of private sector from the exports is around $15b and in case the private sector gets powerful this amount can reach $50b in five years.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – This year, on the 50th anniversary of the first expedition of Polish mountaineers by Jelcz to the high mountains, another expedition will take place in this historic vehicle. The aim of the expedition is to make the Polish mountain sport achievements known all over the World. Our goal is to remind the world about the achievements of Poles in the history of world Himalayan mountaineering and the organizational background of the Golden Age of Polish Himalayan Mountaineering. Through the international tour by Jelcz truck from Poland to Nepal, we care for the memory and honor of Polish climbers, participants of expeditions, with particular emphasis on the role of the drivers of these expedition trucks.

The golden era of Polish Himalayan mountaineering was in the 1970s and 1980s, when Poles not only climbed the highest peaks of the Himalayas and the Karakoram, but also became famous as the first conquerors of these summits in winter. The world initiator of these activities was our famous compatriot Andrzej Zawada.

Jelcz played a huge role in the success of Polish climbers, as our climbers travelled not only to the highest mountains in the world, but also transported their equipment and food. The most prominent Polish climbers today agree on this:

“If it had not been for Jelcz, Poles would not have achieved such great successes in the world of mountaineering”.

Arkadiusz Peryga. Driver and mechanic of the expedition 2021. He restored the car! Technical scope of the project.

Ryszard Wloszczowski. Climber from 1979 Annapurna South Expedition who spent the trip by Jelcz car from Poland to Nepal and back 42 years ago. Representative function – snapped up in the media.

Dariusz Majewski. Technical support. He ensure technical car in case of technical issues. Logistic additional scope on the project.

The team took a part in 28 biggest events in Poland. We achieved 167 154 receivers.

In the scope of this project organizers plan an exhibition in Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tehran on September 7.

The 5.4 ton bomb was found in Sept. 2019 during work to deepen the waterway. It’s located on the southern edge of a popular Baltic Sea resort of Swinoujscie that, like Szczecin, was a busy Nazi Germany military port during the war.

In a defusing project that began Monday and is expected to last for five days, experts will be seeking to neutralize the Tallboy underwater by causing its explosives to burn out in a controlled way, AP reported.

It is believed to be the first such underwater operation on a Tallboy, which have previously been neutralized on land in Germany, Norway and France.

Because of the risk to their lives, over 750 residents within 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) of the bomb had to evacuate for the duration of the operation and a nearby ferry service was suspended.

The Tallboy bomb was designed by British aeronautical engineer Barnes Wallis and was used by the Royal Air Force to destroy large Nazi-controlled objects through underground shocks.

The one in Swinoujscie was probably used in April 1945 on the Nazi German battleship Luetzow. Experts from the 12 Division of Balers in Wolin have currently no explanation of why it did not explode then.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Polish President Andrzej Duda won five more years in power on a deeply conservative platform after a closely fought election that is likely to deepen the country’s isolation in the European Union.

Nearly final results from Sunday’s presidential election put him on more than 51%, giving him an assailable lead over Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who won almost 49% of the votes, the National Election Commission said, Reuters reported.

Duda is allied with the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, and his victory will give the government a new mandate to pursue reforms of the judiciary and media which the executive European Commission says subvert democratic standards.

“I don’t want to speak on behalf of the campaign staff, but I think that this difference is large enough that we have to accept the result,” Grzegorz Schetyna, the former head of the opposition Civic Platform grouping that fielded Trzaskowski.

Backed by PiS, Duda ran an acrimonious campaign, laced with homophobic language, attacks on private media and accusations that Trzaskowski serve foreign interests instead of Poland’s. Trzaskowski dismissed the accusations.

Duda’s victory opens the way to new clashes between Poland and the European Commission as the EU tries to deal with the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising nationalism across the 27-member bloc.

Before PiS and Duda came to power in 2015, Poland had one of the most pro-European administrations in the bloc’s ex-communist east. But it has become increasingly combative, with divisions focusing on climate change and migration, in addition to democratic norms.

Warsaw mayor since 2018, Trzaskowski had said he would seek a more tolerant Poland if elected. He has criticized PiS’ rhetoric, vowing to abolish state news channel TVP Info, which critics say gave overt support to Duda in its programming.

But to many religious conservatives in Poland, a predominantly Catholic nation, he came to represent the threats facing traditional values when he pledged to introduce education about LGBT rights in the city’s schools.

“It’s what populists do very effectively. You name the enemy and you focus on combating him. This is what was used in this campaign, the fear of others,” Anna Materska-Sosnowska, a political scientist at the Warsaw University.

In the last week of campaigning, PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski accused Trzaskowski of being at the centre of attempts to allow minorities to “terrorize” the rest of society.

Economic policy was also at the heart of the election, with Duda painting himself as a guardian of generous PiS welfare program that have transformed life for many poorer Poles since the party came to power in 2015.

PiS now faces the prospect of three years of uninterrupted rule with the next parliamentary election scheduled for 2023.

Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro suggested late on Sunday the party could push on quickly with its conservative agenda following the vote, and with its ambition to spur change in private media ownership towards outlets more favorable to its ambitions.

“We need to take care of the issue of values more than before,” he told state broadcaster TVP. “There is also the matter of an imbalance among the media.”

Some observers say Trzaskowski’s strong showing could energize the opposition, which has struggled until now to formulate a cohesive narrative in the face of the PiS success in winning over many Poles with its economic and social agenda.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – People of Poland began voting in a presidential election Sunday that had been scheduled for May but was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, a ballot taking place amid deep cultural and political divisions in the European Union nation.

President Andrzej Duda, a 48-year-old conservative backed by the nationalist ruling Law and Justice Party, is running against 10 other candidates as he seeks a second 5-year term. Whether Duda wins or not will determine whether the ruling party keeps its near-monopoly on political power in Poland.

Most recent polls showed that no single candidate was likely to reach the 50% required to avoid a runoff. In that case, the two top vote-getters will face each other on July 12.

Polling stations remain open until 9 p.m. (1900 GMT), and exit polls will be announced immediately afterward. The final officials results are expected by Wednesday at the latest.

Poland has not been as badly hit by the pandemic as many countries in Western Europe, and most people were voting in person, though required to wear masks and observe other hygiene rules. There was also a mail-in voting option, and thousands of voters in some southwestern regions with higher virus infection numbers were required to vote by mail.

As of Sunday, Poland had nearly 34,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among its 38 million people, with over 1,400 deaths, AP reported.

Duda’s campaign focused on defending traditional values in the mostly Catholic nation while promising to raise living standards to Western European levels. He took a position against same-sex marriage and adoption and denounced the LGBT rights movement as a dangerous “ideology.”

That kind of rhetoric — along with laws that have given the conservative Law and Justice party much greater control over the justice system and the ability to harness public media to promote the government’s image — have raised concerns among some that Poland is following Hungary in eroding democratic norms established after communism collapsed three decades ago.

Duda’s strongest challenge comes from the Warsaw mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, also 48, who is backed by the centrist Civic Platform party.

On the campaign trail, Trzaskowski, has promised to keep Law and Justice’s popular social welfare spending programs while vowing to restore constitutional norms.

Trzaskowski entered the race late after an election originally scheduled for May 10 was scrapped due to the pandemic. Duda’s once strong support, bolstered by adulatory coverage in public media, began to slip once virus lockdown restrictions were lifted and other candidates could campaign.

Polling ahead of Sunday’s vote suggested Duda was the front-runner but might not reach the 50% needed to win outright. Polls also showed that he would have a more difficult time in a runoff given that many opposition votes would be expected to consolidate against Duda.

The other candidates include Szymon Holownia, a TV personality, and a journalist who had once studied to be a priest. Holownia is unaffiliated with any party and has generated some enthusiasm among those tired of years of bickering between Law and Justice and Civic Platform, the country’s two main parties.

Also in the running are a left-wing politician who is Poland’s first openly gay presidential contender, Robert Biedron; the head of an agrarian party, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz; and a lawmaker with the far-right Confederation party, Krzysztof Bosak.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Last-minute decision of Poland to carry out its May presidential elections by post due to the coronavirus pandemic has raised “concern”, EU Values and Transparency Commissioner Vera Jourova told Polish daily Rzeczpospolita on Wednesday.

“I followed this process very closely. I’m concerned about free and fair presidential elections and the quality of voting, of the legality and constitutionality of such a vote,” she told the Poland newspaper.

Poland’s parliament, where Poland’s ruling nationalists, the Law, and Justice (PiS) party, have a majority in alliance with two other parties, this week backed a plan to conduct the presidential election on May 10 by postal ballot to limit the risks of coronavirus transmission.

Critics accuse PiS of putting its political interests ahead of public health concerns. President Andrzej Duda, an ally of PiS who is seeking a fresh five-year term, is currently ahead in opinion polls.

“Postal voting is a huge change and such a method is being used for the first time, people aren’t used to it,” Jourova said, Reuters reported.

She pointed to recommendations from the Council of Europe for countries not to carry out “fundamental changes” to electoral rules in the year leading up to elections.

Winning the presidential election would enable PiS to cement its reforms of the judiciary, which the European Union has said subvert the rule of law. A president hostile to PiS could block its efforts.

The European Commission is still working on its reaction to a new Polish law that critics say is designed to muzzle judges who question court appointments under new rules, Jourova added.

Poland’s overhaul of its judiciary constitutes “destruction”, not reform, Jourova said earlier this year.
