TEHRAN (Iran News) – HRW (Human Rights Watch) condemned Tel Aviv’s decision to expel the rights group’s Israel director from the occupied territories over his support for the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In a statement on Sunday, HRW Executive Director Ken Roth said that American citizen Omar Shakir, the US-based rights group’s director for Israel and the Palestinian territories, is to be deported from Israel on Monday over his support the BDS movement and condemned Israel for that.

The movement, which is a Palestinian-led campaign promoting a total and worldwide boycott against the Israeli regime, was initiated in 2005 by over 170 Palestinian organizations and later turned international.

BDS, which was inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, says it continues its efforts until it forces Israel to abide by “its obligations under international law” and end its occupation of Palestinian lands.

HRW rejected the idea that Shakir had supported the boycott movement against Israel, saying the occupying regime is, in fact, seeking to suppress criticism of policies towards Palestinians, according to Press TV.

Elsewhere in his statement, Roth said Tel Aviv tried “as much as it can” to silence efforts “spotlighting the human rights violations at the heart of the oppressive, discriminatory occupation (of Palestinian land).”

In a post on his Twitter account on Sunday, he noted that his expulsion was over his “human rights advocacy with HRW.”

“Israel is slated to deport me tomorrow over my work as HRW’s director in Israel,” Shakir said, adding, “It’s drawing a red line: free expression in Israel today doesn’t include basic rights advocacy (calling on businesses to refrain from complicity in abuses). We aren’t the first & won’t be the last.”

Thousands of volunteers worldwide have joined the BDS movement, which calls for people and groups across the world to cut economic, cultural and academic ties to Tel Aviv, to help promote the Palestinian cause.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The European Union’s top court ruled on Tuesday that goods from Israeli settlements must be labeled as produced in occupied territory, a decision hailed by Palestinians and condemned by Israel.

The Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice said labels must not imply that goods produced in the occupied territory came from Israel, Reuters reported.

Labels must “prevent consumers from being misled” as to the fact that Israel is present in the territories concerned as an occupying force, the court said.

The case focused on a winery in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, but the court referred to all territory Israel invaded in the 1967 war, including East Al-Quds and the Golan Heights, both of which the regime annexed, as well as the West Bank.

On top of wine, Israeli farmers grow and package herbs, fruits, and vegetables in the territories, many of which have been exported to the EU and labeled as “Product of Israel”.

Saeb Erekat, the Palestinian chief negotiator, welcomed the ruling and called on all EU countries to “implement what is a legal and political obligation”.

Palestinians want to establish a state on territory occupied by Israel since 1967. Settlements on occupied land are an unlawful violation of the Geneva conventions and multiple UN resolutions.

Israel’s foreign ministry said it “strongly rejects” the ruling “which serves as a tool in the political campaign against Israel”. Foreign Minister Israel Katz said he would work with foreign ministers of EU countries to prevent its implementation.

In its ruling, the EU court said settlements involved the transfer of Israelis “in violation of the rules of general international humanitarian law”.

As a result, failing to inform EU consumers they were potentially buying goods produced in settlements denies them access to “ethical considerations and considerations relating to the observance of international law”, it said.

Human Rights Watch, which monitors Israel’s activities in the occupied territories, said the court decision was an important step toward EU member states not participating “in the fiction that illegal settlements are part of Israel”.

“European consumers are entitled to be confident that the products they purchase are not linked to serious violations of international humanitarian law,” it said.

Touching upon an initiative proposed by US President Donald Trump, dubbed as the “Deal of the Century”, the Iranian diplomat said, “The so-called deal of the century is based on wrong assumptions simply because it is to buy the Palestinian cause and aspirations, honor and dignity, property and territory, and inalienable rights of an entire nation.”

He made the remarks addressing the United Nations Security Council meeting on “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question” on Tuesday.

The full text of his speech is as follows:

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

Mr. President,

I thank you for convening this open debate and align myself with the NAM and OIC statements.

The main development since the previous open debate was the attempts to implement the so-called “deal of the century” through convening a workshop on Palestine in Bahrain.

This initiative is based on ill-intents, wrong assumptions and unrealistic approaches, and therefore is definitely doomed to fail.

It is based on ill intent simply because it has been proposed by the U.S., a country who is well-known for its biased policies rendering unconditional support for Israel as well as unjust practices towards the Palestinians.

The latest living examples include moving the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Occupied Syrian Golan, both of which are in flagrant violation of the peremptory norms of international law.

Basically, during the past seven decades, the Security Council has been unable to force the Occupying Power to end the occupation because of the unreserved support of the US for Israel.

Such a systematic US support, when even Israel is committing the most heinous and barbaric crimes, has emboldened the Zionist regime to continue, with total impunity, to commit all international crimes systematically.

Relying on such supports, Israel has also continued its expansionist policies and illegitimate practices in oppressing the Palestinians in gross violation of their basic rights.

One of such brutalities is the decade-long illegal blockade of Israel on Gaza, turning it to the largest open prison in the world. This inhumane blockade must come to an end.

Moreover, the so-called “deal of the century” is based on wrong assumptions simply because it is aimed at buying all causes and aspirations, honor and dignity, property and territory, and inalienable rights of an entire nation.

It is certainly an illusion and therefore definitively will completely fail.

The cause of Palestine is based on the struggle of a nation for freedom; for liberty; for independence; for complete control over all its ancestral lands; for preserving its religious and cultural identity and sites; and for saving its honor and dignity.

Diminishing and shrinking such noble and holy causes to economic improvement is the wrongest ever possible assumption to solve the question of Palestine.

Additionally, the so-called “deal of the century” is based on an unrealistic approach, simply because all of the Palestinian groups, without exception, have strongly rejected this deal.

Furthermore, Al-Quds Al-Sharif, in addition to Palestinians, is dear to all Muslims, and no Muslim in the world is ready to accept such a disgraceful plan. Al-Quds Al-Sharif is and will remain the capital of Palestine.

History tells us that no nation has compromised on its sacred causes and the nation of Palestine is no exception.

Mere struggle and resistance of Palestinians in the course of the past seven decades clearly indicate that how resolute, determined and persevere they are in realizing their noble objectives of liberty and independence.

They suffered economically for seven decades to liberate their lands. What they need is freedom and liberation. Once the occupation ends, they well know how to improve the economy of their independent State.

At the same time, the international community should continue its strong support to the Palestinians in their struggle to liberate their homeland.

Under the pretext of economic improvement, the main aim and the true nature of the so-called “deal of the century” is to consolidate the occupation. The World must resist this unjust move.

This Council as well must end the vicious cycle of being bullied by one of its permanent members who unlawfully and brazenly continue rendering this body inactive and ineffective regarding Israel.

This hypocritical policy should come to an end and the Council must be able to play its Charter-based role in support of the Palestinians.

Ultimately, like any other crisis, the question of Palestine cannot be solved without addressing its root causes. There is no magic solution. The unlawful occupation of Palestine is the main source of this crisis and it can end only by ending the occupation.

Finally, the Israeli representative, in total disregard of this meeting’s agenda, which is respected by all and is focused on the Palestinian question, unsuccessfully tried to distract attentions away from the crimes and unlawful policies of its regime.

He must have explained why they continue the occupation of Palestine; investing on death and destruction; invading other countries; imposing inhumane blockade on Gaza; killing innocent children; demolishing homes, schools and hospitals; promoting racism; developing all types of weapons of mass destruction, including hundreds of nuclear weapons; rejecting to join treaties banning WMDs, particularly the NPT; rejecting the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. Stop fabrications, lawlessness, brutality and crimes and be accountable.

I thank you, Mr. President.

Increasing speculation about ‘Deal of the Century’, which is scheduled to be announced after Ramadan by Senior Advisor to the US President Jared Kushner, indicate that there are no rights for the Palestinians in this plan and alternative areas are considered for the Palestinian to form Palestinian state.

According to news reports, Jordan has opposed the plan so far, but the US and Saudi Arabia’s pressure on this country due to its economic problems may eventually lead to Jordan’s approval of ‘Deal of the Century’.

Based on media reports, the US, the EU and the Arab countries on the Persian Gulf have agreed to help the implementation of this agreement.

Earlier, based on a document which has been leaked from the Israeli regime’s Foreign Ministry; a Hebrew-language medium, revealed the details of ‘Deal of the Century’, according to which the Palestinian state will be formed without having an army and weapons.

Referring to ‘Deal of the Century’, Mustafa Yaghi, Member of the House of Representatives of Jordan said to Mehr News Agency that any actions and solutions which will not lead to the formation of the Palestinian state and end of Zionist’s occupation and return to “the line of June 4, 1967”, are not accepted by Palestinians and Jordanians.

Basically, the issue of the alternative land to form Palestinian state has been rejected by Jordanian and Palestinian leaders, and even Palestinians living in Jordan are opposed to this matter, he added.

He mentioned that the successive attempts by the US administration to publish some of the provisions of ‘Deal of the Century’ are only measures to evaluate the reactions to this deal.

Jordanian MP said that the efforts of Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and others to deceive the Palestinians by giving money to them will never succeed, adding, ‘Deal of the Century’ is nothing more than an agreement that will ultimately not lead to solve the Palestinian issue.

The fate of this plan will be similar to other initiatives such as the Arab Peace Initiative, etc., which have been faced with Palestinian opposition, Yaghi stressed.

He noted that Jordan will not also accept a deal over monitoring the holy sites of Islam and Christianity in Jerusalem.

Interview by Mohammad Fateminia
