“We are fully aligned with the US position on this,” Mogherini told reporters in Lisbon, Reuters reported.

“We expect a full-out investigation and full transparency from Saudi authorities on what happened.”

Khashoggi, a former newspaper editor in Saudi Arabia, disappeared eight days ago after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Turkish authorities believe he was killed inside the consulate.

On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States was “concerned by his disappearance” and asked the Saudi government to support a “thorough investigation”.

“We are doing our best to keep Iran in the deal, to keep Iran benefiting from the economic benefits that the agreement brings to the people of Iran because we believe this is in the security interests of not only our region, but also of the world,” Associated Press quoted her as saying.

She went on to say that trade between Iran and EU is a “fundamental aspect of the Iranian right to have an economic advantage in exchange for what they have done so far, which is being compliant with all their nuclear-related commitments.”

EU is encouraging small and medium companies to enhance business with Iran, Mogherini said, adding that trade is an integral part of JCPOA.

TEHRAN – European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world is working, rejecting attempts by certain countries to dismantle the agreement.

“The deal we have made with Tehran works. It is a document that is more than 100 pages long, in which Iran has made very specific commitments and which is under constant scrutiny by the IAEA,” Mogherini told euronews.

“Up until now, the Agency (IAEA) has conducted nine positive checks. You do not dismantle a nuclear deal that works. It’s a question of priority for the security of Europe and the whole region. President Trump has announced a US strategy on Iran which casts doubt on the deal, and we have reminded our American friends that the deal does not belong to one state or another, but that it is a UN Security Council resolution, and that we expect all parties to fully respect it.”

The remarks came as concerns have been growing in recent months that the US administration may unilaterally scrap the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

In a major confrontational stance against Iran on October 13, US President Donald Trump refused to certify the multilateral deal on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said he will choose not to certify that Tehran is complying with the agreement.

The 159-page nuclear agreement was reached in July 2015 and came into force in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.

TEHRAN – The EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Monday hailed “extremely encouraging” talks with Aung San Suu Kyi on the Rohingya crisis, welcoming steps towards the repatriation of Muslims driven from Myanmar into Bangladesh.

But her optimistic tone appeared sharply at odds with the realities on the ground in a crisis that has seen 620,000 Rohingya flee rape, murder and arson in Myanmar’s Rakhine state since late August, AFP reported.

Deadly attacks by Rohingya militants on August 25 sparked a massive backlash from Myanmar’s security forces that the UN says may amount to “ethnic cleansing”.

Diplomatic pressure has been growing on Myanmar, especially on its Nobel Peace Prize-winning leader Suu Kyi.

In response the country has said it is ready and willing to take back refugees, if they can “verify” they belong in Rakhine.

Mogherini, who visited refugee camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar over the weekend, emerged from Monday’s talks with Suu Kyi in a positive mood.

“I found it (the talks) extremely encouraging,” she told reporters in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw at a meeting of Asian and European foreign ministers.

“I am very much encouraged by the possibility – that I believe is real and concrete – of Myanmar and Bangladesh” reaching an agreement for the repatriation of refugees.

The two countries have yet to strike a binding deal on repatriation.

Rights groups say a speedy and safe repatriation of significant numbers of Rohingya is highly unlikely since large numbers are still fleeing violence, fear and hunger on a daily basis.

The status of the Muslim minority also remains highly emotive in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where they are denied citizenship and labelled “Bengalis”, or illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

Rohingya villages have been razed and rice fields commandeered or left to ruin, raising major questions over what they can return to.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya, pushed out of Myanmar in several previous army-backed operations, have also yet to return despite decades-old repatriation deals with Bangladesh.

Those who have fled Rakhine in recent months have told horrific stories of rape, murder and arson by Myanmar troops and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists.

Myanmar’s military denies the allegations.

Washington’s top diplomat Rex Tillerson last week cited “credible” reports of atrocities since late August.

Myanmar’s diplomatic isolation over its treatment of the Rohingya has been eased by China, which has helped shield it from censure at the UN Security Council.

China was one of the few foreign friends of the country’s former junta.

Beijing covets access to Myanmar’s western coast for ports and pipelines including in Rakhine state, where Chinese businesses are spending billions of dollars.

On Sunday Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Suu Kyi and reaffirmed support for Myanmar over the Rakhine issue, according to the state-backed Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper.

He added that “poverty alleviation” was the crux of the problem and urged Myanmar and Bangladesh to solve the crisis through “dialogue”.

The European Union (EU) says Saad Hariri, who shockingly resigned as the Lebanese prime minister in Saudi Arabia more than a week ago, should return to his country, and warns against foreign meddling in Lebanon’s affairs.

“We appeal first of all to the political forces to focus on Lebanon and what they can deliver to their citizens, Prime Minister Hariri to return to his country and the unity government … to focus on domestic achievements,” the EU foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said Monday, after hosting a meeting of all 28 EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

She said foreign interference in Lebanon was a “current and always existing threat,” implying a warning to Riyadh.

Hariri announced his resignation in Riyadh on November 4, shortly after travelling to Saudi Arabia. The televised announcement saw him reading out from a statement.

Sources close to him later told Reuters that he had been given the statement. However, Hariri gave an interview earlier this week amid growing criticisms of Saudi Arabia, describing himself as a “free man” who intended to “return” to his home country “within days.”

The EU’s diplomatic chief further said that the meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers had voiced unanimous support for Lebanon’s “unity and stability.”

Posters of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who resigned last week in a televised speech airing from the Saudi capital Riyadh, hang on Beirut’s seaside corniche on November 10, 2017, with a caption reading below in Arabic “#We_are_all_Saad.”

“We expect no external interference in this national agenda and we believe it is essential to avoid importing into Lebanon regional conflicts, regional dynamics, regional tensions that have to stay out of the country,” Mogherini said.

She added that she would meet Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil in Brussels on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said Hariri should return as his departure has shaken Lebanon.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian likewise called for “non-interference” in Lebanon. “For there to be a political solution in Lebanon, it is necessary that all of the political leaders have total freedom of movement and that non-interference is a fundamental principle,” he said as he arrived for the EU meeting.

Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn warned Riyadh that a meltdown in Lebanon would further destabilize the tumultuous Middle East, adding that “a hostage crisis, if that is what is happening with the Lebanese prime minister in Saudi Arabia, is not very good news for the region.”

Last Saturday, Reuters quoted Hariri sources as saying that Saudi Arabia “has concluded that the prime minister had to go because he was unwilling to confront Hezbollah.”

Hariri’s government shares power with the resistance movement.

Riyadh is uneasy with Hezbollah’s considerable military and political influence in Lebanon, which has significantly contributed to the country’s security.

The EU foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, says the nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers has nothing to do with the Islamic Republic’s national missile program, emphasizing the importance of keeping the multilateral pact “as it is.”

Speaking to reporters ahead of a NATO defense ministers meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, Mogherini said Iran’s missile program or its regional polices are not related to the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as two separate issues.

During her talks in Washington a day earlier, “we made clear, very clear, that these issues have to be tackled outside of the nuclear agreement that covers only nuclear related issues,” she said.

Mogherini further said the EU attaches “great importance” to “keeping the Iran nuclear deal up and running,” adding that during her recent visit to Washington she had discussed the issue with US officials.

“For us, it is very important to keep the nuclear agreement as it is -renegotiation is not possible in our view and you do not change an agreement that is delivering,” she added.

The top EU diplomat expressed confidence that the bloc would “manage to keep the Iran nuclear deal in place,” adding that all sides to the accord must remain committed to their obligations under the deal.

“We will continue to keep the highest possible attention for the strictest possible implementation of the agreement – in all its components and by all sides,” she said.

Mogherini further praised Iran’s good cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is tasked with monitoring Iran’s compliance with the deal under a 2015 UN Security Council resolution.

The UN nuclear watchdog has in eight reports confirmed Iran’s commitment to the terms of the JCPOA struck in 2015 between Tehran and the P5+1 states – Russia, China, France, Britain, the US plus Germany.

“I met also the Director General of IAEA in Washington, Dr [Yukiya] Amano, who reiterated to me his assessment that they are having the appropriate access. We trust the Agency’s independence and technical knowledge to monitor in a very strict manner that all the nuclear commitments that Iran has taken are actually met,” Mogherini added.

From Washington, Amano also hailed Iran for remaining fully committed to its side of the deal.

Under President Donald Trump, who took office more than a year after the JCPOA was signed, Washington has at various times attempted to either scrap the agreement or open renegotiations to change its terms.

The US has also imposed fresh sanctions on Iran over its missile program, which it claims violates the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the nuclear deal.

However, Tehran insists its missile tests do not breach any UN resolutions because they are solely for defense purposes and not designed to carry nuclear warheads.

Iranian officials have time and again said the Islamic Republic’s missile program is for defensive purposes and it’s non-negotiable.

“I got clear indications that the intention is to keep the United States compliant with the agreement,” Mogherini said at a press conference on a visit to Washington on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

“I made clear any outcome of any process … has to be, at the end of the day, compliant with the deal,” she added.

Mogherini said she had voiced her readiness to help lawmakers “find solutions that are compatible” with US compliance under the agreement.

On October 13, Trump in a major confrontational stance against the Islamic Republic of Iran refused to certify the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The 159-page nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) was reached in July 2015 and came into force in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.

TEHRAN – EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini dismissed Washington’s view that the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers should be renegotiated, saying that the agreement is “delivering”.

“There is no need to renegotiate parts of the agreement because the agreement is concerning a nuclear program and as such is delivering,” Mogherini told reporters on Wednesday, following a UN meeting of the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) that negotiated the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive plan of Action (JCPOA), with Iran.

“We have all agreed that all sides are implementing so far the agreement,” she added.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson joined Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif for a first meeting with partners backing the JCPOA.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to scrap the deal unless it is re-opened for negotiations. On Wednesday, Trump told reporters that he had reached a decision, but did not elaborate.

Trump is due to report to the US Congress by October 15 on whether he can certify that Iran is upholding its side of the accord, under which it accepted limits on its nuclear programme.

In his address to the UN General Assembly, the president on Tuesday called the nuclear deal “an embarrassment” for the United States and Tillerson later confirmed that the agreement must be “revisited.”

But Mogherini, who chaired the meeting, argued that it would be unwise to re-open the deal at a time when the world is facing a nuclear threat from North Korea.

“We already have one potential nuclear crisis. We definitely do not need to go into another one,” she said.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told the UN General Assembly earlier that the nuclear deal was endorsed by the UN Security Council and its fate could not be decided by “one or two countries.”
